Just thought it'd might be nice to have a little directory of places to go/eat, things to do for various cities where 44s live/have been. Please add your city to the list! (Also, if you like, add places not to go so we can steer clear.)

For my part:

San Diego, CA

Dae Jang Keum (7905 Engineer Rd, San Diego, CA 92111):

A great little place that has the table top grills for charcoal-smokey goodness. Yangnyumgalbi there is good, definitely recommended. I would recommend getting the Dolsot [edit courtesy of kimtae] Bibimbap rather than just the normal bibimbap. The stone pot is better. However, I've tried the Haemul Pajeun there and it wasn't all that, I would avoid it. (Take at least two people for the grill options, there's a minimum of two orders per table.)

Awesome idea. I live in Orange, CA, and the only Asian restaurants around here are your local Pho and Panda Express. So, I have to do some driving to get some real Chinese food. If you ever find yourself in Roland Heights, there's a cool place called the Diamond Plaza, just off the 60 Freeway:

1380 Fullerton Rd
Rowland Heights, CA 91748
(626) 810-4488

There is a bunch of Chinese restaurants there. Some trendy, some fusion. Pretty much all of them good and worth trying out. It's a popular hangout for Chinese Americans. Just be warned that parking is a bit of a pain there.

I had no idea that it was a drama/person until I took my boyfriend there and he was like, "Hey, isn't this the same name as..."

if you're ever in Michigan,

metro-detroit:
-shangri-la for dimsum at orchard lake road + maple road in west bloomfield

-kitchen hanzo one of the few japanese restaurants that isn't a sushi place. the only izakaya that i know of in this area. all the japanese expats go there after work. the food and sake rocks of course. on haggerty road in west bloomfield

-andiamo osteria in royal oak has good italian. right off of main street in downtown royal oak.

-rangoli for indian food. best in all of metro detroit so its definitely worth the drive. walton blvd in auburn hills

-inn season cafe in royal oak has great vegetarian food...even carnivores like the fare.

-zumba also in royal oak is a nice little mexican place. very fresh yummy food made to order.

-toast in ferndale and now in birmingham. best breakfast food! always busy so get there early or you'll be waiting up to an hour for a table. it IS worth the wait tho. french toast is their specialty but they make a variety of breakfast and lunch meals.

-via nove is another good italian spot...in ferndale at 9mile and woodward.

downtown detroit:
-xochimilco (locals call it 'zocchis') on bagley in mexican town. tasty mexican and cheap.

-traffic jam and snug on canfield st. eclectic menu...everything's great. they make their own cheeses and beer. local ingredients, always fresh. you can watch them brew beer.

-cliff bells on park ave. best jazz joint in a really cool art deco space.

-pizzapopolis in greektown...if you want to get full from one slice of pizza then go here. super deep dish pizzas...

-fishbones also in greektown, very popular. not much for veggies tho...

-sweet georgia brown has live jazz and 'upscale' americana food...its fancy pants but also very yummy. on brush st.

downtown grand rapids:
-go to the BOB there's lots of stuff: food, dancing, live bands, an arcade, a brewery, pool tables, outdoor decks, and a comedy club... but i like it for the beer....their brewery rocks the pale ales (and i'm not a pale ale fan usually) and they've got a great red.yum.

-SANCHEZ awesome awesome awesomest food ever! that's all you need to know but i'll tell you more anyways. ;) great tapas place, killer sangria, friendly and fast service, within walking distance of hotels...that's important b/c when you overeat b/c the food is too good and literally have to roll yourself out the restaurant...you don't want to have to drive anywhere...just keep rolling right into a nearby hotel and sleep off the food coma. ^_^

-the GRAM (grand rapids art museum) the first built LEED certified museum, great design, great exhibits, yummy food in the cafe, right up the street from the BOB and SANCHEZ!! woot! the building itself is enough to go visit, but once you tear your eyes away from the awesome design, you'll notice some great art on the walls. the have live bands play there too. woot!

traverse city:
the little downtown area has some cool places/eats. michael moore's theater is there, famous for its cherries so there's cherry everything there...everything, wineries...madonna's family vineyard "ciccone vineyards" is there...haven't tried the wine but i heard its not that great. ah well.

-north peak brewery....another place that makes a pale ale that i like. also have amazing chocolate stout, and a nice red. the food is also yummy. on front street a few blocks from the center of downtown.

- minervas (inside park place hotel) great restaurant!
-there's a nice indie coffee shop up the street about a block (towards the bay) from the park place hotel that makes a perfect latte.

okees...so i intended to post a couple of my faves from each area....didn't realize i have a ton of faves...ah well. here's a decent list. so if by chance you swing by 'the D' hit these spots. you won't regret it.

Hey, if you're ever in Atl, Ga. then you have to stop into one of two Abdullah the Butcher's House of Ribs and Chinese Food. Yes, it is THE Abdullah "the madman from the Sudan" Butcher of 70's and 80's pro wrestling fame. I know, soul food and Chinese, WTF. Abdullah married a Korean woman and apparently she handles the Chinese part. Don't go for the Chinese. Do go for the Ribs which are apparently some of the best in the city. Finally, no, I've never been but it's been a long time ambition of mine to go and see the madman behind the grill. Take lots of pics if you can and post them here :D .

Strangely enough, I've always harbored a secret desire to open up a Chinese Soul Food joint. Ya'know, you could get fried chicken and bao or oxtail stew with cornbread. Mmmm.

The oldest restaurant in Portland is owned by a Chinese family. They specialize in turkey dishes. They've got a cool drink called "Spanish Coffee," and the preparation is really cool, but it depends on who makes it.
