Columbia Pictures has refashioned its new version of the 1984 hit The Karate Kid as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith, reports Variety.

The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Jaden's father Will Smith and Ken Stovitz.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.

The younger Smith, who next stars in The Day the Earth Stood Still (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=19019), is a martial arts practitioner.

I don't know why, but any time anyone uses the word "exotic" I want to shoot them.

Fuck this. This'll be one movie I'm definitely skipping over (along with Twilight) and may this inevitable bomb cause massive career damage.

*small voice* I kind of want to see Twilight. Those books are crack. Though I'm still too cheap to buy them in hardcover, so I've only read the first two.

My moi-moi's company has been doing the PR / publicity for the movie here in Seattle and it's already going CRAZY. There are folks flying into down from Denver just to get autographs from the actors...

The Story of Twilight

WM who's portrayed as beyond gorgeous, mysterious badass (read: average-looking, uselessly emo, oversized mosquito) is madly in love with WF who is portrayed as beyond gorgeous and "special" babe (read: average-looking, special-simply-because-the-script-keeps-saying-she's-special chick) and gets to play hero to protect his priceless, special WF. Cue token Negro to pimp the dreadlocks and be notably absent from most of the posters and other miscellaneous merch at Hot Topic.

*yawn* Been there. Done that. Passed on the T-shirt.

Haha, I feel like a quarter of the shows I watch are like this: Gossip Girl, True Blood, etc. I still find it entertaining in the silliest way possible.

I liked the books (I've read three so far). Beyond any racial overtones, the story itself was entertaining as a quick read.

EH, i'm willing to give the karate kid a chance. I mean the original starred a white guy learning karate so a black kid learning karate isn't that far fetched but of course we know they couldn't put an asian in the role because of course you all already know karate, ALL OF YOU. So maybe the sub story can be an asian in south central learning how to rap and hold a gun sideways in that ridiculous manner that rappers insist on. And the black kids over in beijing learning karate and.....um okay, wait I have to think on this some more. I'll go and come up with some stereotypical crap that offends both black and asians and i'll be back later (how much you wanna bet my offensive crap actually makes it into the script:cool: )

The more offensive you can make it, the better!

Maybe the movie will be called The Kung-fu Kid, because it's set in Beijing.

Being set in Beijing, I think it is pretty clear who will reprise the bully roles from the first Karate Kid. It will be the final insult if the mentor figure is a White guy-- it would not surprise me.

Remember, somewhere in the middle of the movie you gotta have a 25 minute video montage of the Asian guy practicing how to shoot guns (with his shirt off, of course) and learning the ancient secrets of gang signs patiently taught by the wise old black gangsta who knows his student is "Da Chosen One". Meanwhile, the black sensei's cute daughter hiding in the corner spies on the gangster-in-training with open love and admiration. This all happens with a background of various exotic ghetto locales and a popular rap soundtrack.

Shit, I'd pay money to watch this.

i wouldn't be surprised if they tapped gongli or michelle yeoh for the miyagi role.
