PSP fanboys will hate, but the Nintendo DS is the BEST handheld game system.
Do you like puzzle games? Old school 2D action games? The DS has the best of 'em, and even better... Homebrew functionality with things like the R4:

I probably play with my Nintendo DS even more than my PC or Playstation these days (since I don't have a next gen system like a Xbox360 or PS3 or Wii)...

many childhood memories (sort of) with burger time on a stolen gameboy :p
i also think ds is the way to go, my brother has a psp as well and says it's more of a media centre type handheld, whereas ds is a more creative games machine.

psp or ds are your only (?) choices.
i bought myself a psp last year because everyone around me had a ds.
they both have their good points.
there's now a dsi, with a built-in camera.
i don't know about the ds, but the browser on the psp is super slow.
and yeah, psp has got a lot of media stuff: tv antenna (that has to be bought seperately), wireless internet, you can transfer mp3s to it, watch movies.
maybe a lot of that can be done with the ds too, i don't have one, so i don't know.

It depends on what type of game you like. If you like more casual games like card games, sudoku, pool, etc then the DS is great because of the touch screen. I'm not sure about other types of games, but I've heard a lot of people rave about Metroid and Castlevania.
The only drawback is that it can't play movies or anything like that.
