Heh, I can't even imagine how drastically they'd change this. For those who've watched it, I think you know what I mean.

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park's Oldboy, says Variety. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new film will be distributed by Universal.
In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.
Smith who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.
Spielberg is next expected to direct Tintin.

Spielberg being Spielberg, he'll probably scrub it squeaky clean (except for the violence).
I also can't see myself enjoying this movie with any other actor in it. I think that the guy in the original was perfect for it.

whats the point of taking an awesome movie and ruining it? ugh...this makes me ill. why not give an opportunity to indie scripts and unknown/little known names instead of watering down and repackaging other's work?

I like how out of all the Asian remakes, the one Asian movie where some guy is thrown into a jail is gonna its lead be played by a black dude.
Shallow, Hollywood. I see what you do.

Smith cannot play this role. He's not beat up enough. Look at Hancock. He did not pull off the hollow empty guy role there and he certainly won't be able to do it in Old Boy. Christ, Gary Oldman is probably the only Hollywood guy that could pull this off but why bother? Damn, I hate Spielberg (and Lucas).

therein lies the problem: they don't think they're going to ruin it. popular Asian movies are much much better screen-tested than indie scripts and unknown talent. on paper, they're safer investments. and Scorsese's win with The Departed only encourages Hollywood to continue this trend.
but having said that, i actually liked the American remake of The Ring and The Grudge more than the Japanese originals.
unrelated note, about the remake of The Eye - the ex and i thought it was hilarious that Jessica Alba (who is part Mexican but basically wishes she wasn't) played the main character that had no hint of being Mexican at all, but got the transplant from a Mexican girl and eventually went to Mexico.

I didn't like either of the American versions...though perhaps I saw Grudge 2, and not Grudge. (Haha, yeah, it was Grudge 2...I wanted to watch Edison Chen.) But the Japanese Ringu is one of scariest horror movies I've ever seen. I liked Ju-On well enough, but it's not that amazing. Japanese Dark Water...now that was freaky.

I've only seen the Japanese versions of Ringu (all of them), Ju-On, Chakushin Ari, Honogurai Mizu no Soko Kara. But most of the people I know who saw both the American and Japanese versions said they preferred the Japanese version. They said the American ones tended to try too hard to explain everything while in the Japanese ones, the unknown added to the total scare-factor.

What in the cinema recycling hell are these people doing. At least screen test Sammo Hung (sp?) or something. He at least looks haggard and is Asian but damn isn't it enough to destroy a classic. You can't even give an Asian brother a job while destroying said classic.

okay just saw the trailor. Another martial arts movie? For reals though? For really reals though? I think I'm just all around cranky today and am basically having "black issues" with a lot of what's going on and then come on the "asian movement board" and "contribute" a little of my crankiness to your movement (your welcome by the way:cool: , Every little bit helps).
I have to try and put a good spin on this and there is actually some.
First at least it's not the Crouching Tiger mythical, mystical, magical asians doing martial art. You know jumping and flying through the air in beautiful but fussy ass costumes. At least yall get to kick and jump in real time.
Second more asians on screen. Good for yall. Stereotypical role, yes. But it gets yall out there. With black cinema we had to go through several years of boyz in the 'hood like movies which at least gave some directors and actors an ever so slight foothold in hollywood and gave us a platform to say "Hey we don't all live like that" and led to an ever so slight widening of opportunities. We then had something to retort. We got some movies out there that showed differently. Asians haven't had anything out there to even retort and say we are not all like that. So you have to look at this and say at least people will see some new faces.
And the dude with the long hair is fine.:D
That is a confusing trailor. I have no idea what the movie is about. Five friends. Okay. What are they training for? The olympics? A career? What's the storyline? I'm going to need them to go back in the studio and put a little bit more into that before I'm interested. At least the mythical, magical asian movies had love story lines. What is this about.
p.s. When I saw the little girl I just knew zhiyi zang (sp) was bout to get up in another picture. Lil' girl looks dead on her.:p
