This looks like a great movie: http://www.mongolmovie.com/

It is in theater now but it is in limited releases. It got nominated for best foreign films.

I suspect if Genghis Khan was white, there probably would have been 10 movies made about him in Hollywood. The only Genghis Khan movie was an old one where they whitefaced Genghis Khan. They did the same to Attila the Hun too and he was from Asia.

This movie was made by a Russian director. They try to tell it like the original. Mongols and Russians have close ties. Mongols ruled Russia for over 300 years.

Most people don't know this because the west don't want to make the history well known. If not for the death of the Mongol emperor, Europe could be speaking Mongol today. Mongols conquered half of the Europe before the general turned his back to Mongolia to fight for the throne after the death of the emperor.

Here is a little history lesson: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_invasion_of_Europe

If I remember correctly, this movie was originally to star some white male model as Genghis Khan, but that has since changed for some reason. Does anybody remember why? Not that I'm complaining, but they were so close to doing yellowface yet again.

I could be wrong, but I remember it as having been in response to sharp criticize of the yellowfacing of the role. So if that's true, it's an example of activism resulted in something positive.

Wasn't the director adamant about keeping the white guy? He was all, "I care about making a good movie, not about political correctness" or something.

Yet another reason Asians need to develop its own film industry. Leaving up to white guys telling Asian stories is like asking a baby to run a fortune 500 company. They gonna mess it up or twist it to tell it from their point of view or to make them look better. They don't care about the truth or the real history.

Bottom line is Asians need to tell Asian stories. It is pretty tiring keep seeing dumb ass movies like Forbidden Kingdom where they have to get some dumb ass white kid involved somehow.

I think Mongolians in China and in outer Mongolia will riot if they try to put a white guy as Genghis Khan. For that matter, I think many Asians worldwide would laugh at it. They might get away with it in 1950, but in 2008 with Internet I think people gonna notice it a bit.

I hope the movie will follow the real story line a little bit. Whether you like him or hate him, Genghis Khan was one of the greatest figures in the history of the world and it is time someone tell his story properly. He might be ruthless, but he was also a great leader.

They actually got Tadanobu Asano to play Genghis Khan. He's a pretty bad-ass actor who's been in Ichi the Killer, Zatoichi, and Taste of Tea.

My sister's company is doing the promos for it here in Seattle. I was joking with her that she needs to get Mr. Asano out here so I can meet him.

That's a big improvement from Leonardo DiCaprio.

I saw the movie a couple weeks ago; it was really good! I agree with a positive reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes: "first-class revisionism"! Not sure how accurate a lot of it was, but it was entertaining, and Asano Tadanobu and the Chinese dude who plays Jammukha were great.

Leonardo as Genghis Khan? Dude that would be laughable. White people in the west don't want to talk about Genghis Khan because they don't want to be reminded that Asians once rode their horses all the way to Europe and destroyed European armies that were in their way. Here is a little history lesson: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_invasion_of_Europe

As a result, Genghis Khan is also world's greatest lover in that 16 million people worldwide might have his genes. Check it out:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-456789/Genghis-Khan-The-daddy-lovers.html. BTW, what the fuck with the picture of white facing Genghis Khan with yet another white looking actor?

It is probably why many Slavic people look Asian to a certain extend. Those serbia tennis players come to mind.

Anyway, glad there is a movie made about him based on some truth. I learned about him when I visited LA museum a while ago when they had a exhibit dedicated to the Mongols. That is where I learned how Chinese culture influenced development of many middle eastern cultures due to the Mongols.

I hope it comes out on blu ray. I am trying to buy all my Asian based films on blu ray. For the other ones, bittorrent is fine.

Haven't we already been through this? Asian countries do have their own film industries. They just aren't retarded like Hollywood with overblown budgets and wankery. A film made in Hong Kong will cost a fraction of its Hollywood counterpart, and the actors will work insane hours with a skeleton crew. ASIA ALREADY HAS ITS OWN FUCKING INDUSTRY.

If you actually cared to watch movies from Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, China or Japan you'd see an art that has been in practice for decades.

RebelAzn,

Like NS said, the Asian film industry is pretty well established. The Hong Kong and Asian movie industry is famous for the speed and efficiency in which it cranks out films. One of the reasons Hollywood films cost so much $$$ is the long/bad scheduling that stretches movies out over like 3-6 months - you gotta pay all those crew salaries.

In Asia, they crank out some of those movies in LESS than a month... and yes, many of those movies are head and shoulders above the crap Hollywood puts out...

It could have something to do with the fact that they actually have a plot.

Agreed. I will back off from my dubbing of RebelAZN's post as "absolute truth". I guess I was caught up in the moment being pissed about how a white boy almost played Genghis. Asia obviously has its own good movie industry. It's just too bad that this fact is not well known or appreciated in America...especially with actors like Chow Yun Fat settling for self-degrading roles.

Cut him some slack. I assumed he meant Asian-Americans and not
Asia.

and those same movies get remade by hollywood that take ages for it to release.
