I know he's past his prime now, but Kazushi Sakuraba will forever be remembered for beating four Gracies (Royce, Renzo, Ryan, Royler) as well as two Carlson Gracie fighters (Conan, Vitor Belfort).

When I went to his autograph signing in W. Covina, CA, the line of fans waiting stretched around the block.

when was sakuraba signing autographs? and why west covina?




This was quite a few years ago. Maybe 2001 or '02. It was held at a sports bar in W. Covina. PRIDE was promoting their DVDs of the 2000 Grand Prix. You had to buy a product and you got a autograph from Sakuraba. It was raining that day but still all the fans stood in line outside to get a chance to see the legend.

I also got to meet Alexander Otsuka (a former PRIDE fighter) that day.

Sakuraba was a joy to watch during his prime. I LOVED his Gracie "guard passes." (I put it in quotes because it was much more than just a guard pass...)
