I have more than a couple picks, but hands down, my favorite album of 2007 is by a local Seattle underground hip-hop duo (Blue Scholars) called Bayani.

Besides the fact I used to work with the emcee, Geo (he's Filpino American and we used to work together at an Asian American community history organization / museum), I dig the combination of socially conscious lyrics, old school-esque beats, and yes, cultural references from everything to Beacon Hill (the old heart of Seattle's AsianAm community), Vincent Chin, and heck, Transformers.

Two videos off the album:

So music lovers... got a pick for favorite album(s) of the year?

What have you been rock'n out / bump'n to for the past 12 months?

have you heard of native guns? well, now they're off doing their own thing as separate artists, bambu & kiwi. they're from LA/SF and they're probably some of the most conscious lyricists of our time. check out "international guerilla's anthem" by bambu if you haven't already

year-end lists are always hard. i gotta admit i kept graduation by kanyeezy and kala by m.i.a. on repeat on the iPod. other than that i pretty much listen to older stuff which i THOUGHT came out this year. i'm old.

oh shit! first time i ever heard "phenotype" used in a lyric before haha.

Prepare for my nine o' clock work meeting
A couple pale folks slide right by with no greeting
But the people with my phenotype follow with a head-nod up
Because we acknowledge that the shit's fucked up

damn, i'm kinda feelin that. never heard of these guys until now, but now i know.
