I'm not sure about awesome city (perhaps from new eyes), but Chicago has its unique charms that other large cities such as NYC and California lack. I think we're a more blue-collar "realist" town. That NYC glamour or California "cool" shit doesn't fly here.

Then again, despite being the 3rd largest city, our share of the Asian population isn't as large as some of the bigger California cities or NYC. I attribute that to the fact that Chicago is located in the Midwest and Asians don't usually come to the Midwest (and for good reason). They tend to congregate on the West Coast [California, Seattle, Portland] or East Coast [Bos-Wash area: from Boston to NYC Tri-State area to surrounding Philly to the Washington DC/Baltimore/North Virginia area].

I always made a joke that the Asians that don't end up in those areas just got lost and got dispersed elsewhere in the country (like fucking Texas has a lot of Asians for some goddamn reason... seriously, what Asian would think to themselves, "Yeah, I'm going to America and I'll go to... Texas!"). That's desperation right there.

Well, Taisanese did go everywhere, but Chicago was a particularly big destination. Japanese Americans came in droves to Chicago after internment. And there's been other big waves from pretty much everywhere else. But yeah, we are not nearly as populace as on the coasts.

I'm more from downstate and have been in Chicago for about three years. My wife is a city girl and has lived here her whole life with the exception of her time in Japan and college years.

I love Chicago and am pretty involved, although a lot of it is school related stuff. If any of the other Chicago folks want to get together, just let me know. I'll make some time.
