Has anyone used it before? I am planning to backpack a couple of weeks in Japan. I have a Japan Rail Pass to move around. Just in case I get stranded somewhere, I can stay in a capsule hotel. Or anyone has a better suggestion?

My ex-manager used them quite frequently. The only thing I can tell you is that there is no shower. So try to imagine going to work with a sweaty chainsmoking guy who drinks a big gallon *or 3* or alchohol... goes to sleep in his clothes (in the capsule) then comes to work the next day in same clothes... Ive seen him go 3 days repeating that cycle on the same clothes...
Incredible.
I only bring this up because Im in Tokyo again... and we went drinking...and hell be in a capsule right about now.

I think the problem was with your manager and not the hotel. He must have just been an unhygienic man. Most capsule hotels are attached to a bath house so you can go soak. I stayed in quite a few on several trips to Japan over the years. I find many have lounges with overstuffed chairs that have built in speakers so you can watch one of several TV screens in relative privacy. The chairs are often more comfortable than the capsules.

Funny thing was that the day after my previous post he came back to the office unwashed and unfresh. One of the girls in the office pointed it out to me only minutes before he walked up to me and I knew it for myself.
...sad.
