So yesterday I had key lime pie for the first time. And the thing that struck me about it was that it was way too sweet.

So, before I decide to abstain from eating it ever again, is it supposed to be really sweet? Or do I just have a sub-par pie?

I mean, it's not like I can't handle sweet stuff at all, but I suppose my threshold is pretty low.

Everybody has a different idea of what is too sweet but in comparison to say pecan pie, it is not sweet like that. When I went to Key West/southern Florida a couple of months ago, I tried Key Lime pie in a bunch of different places and I have to say, there are many different styles. Some more like pudding, others have a cheesecake like texture, some more sweet or tart than others.

So probably you didn't care for the style of Key Lime you tasted. Some recipes are purist and require Key limes which are much smaller and more tart than regular limes, while other recipes use regular limes which don't have the same flavor. It's possible the pie you tried didn't have real Key lime juice in it because that stuff is tart. They used to be grown in Key West, but now I think they are grown in Mexico and sometimes hard to find. If you do find some, I got a recipe that is more cheesecaky like that I like that isn't too hard to make.

Limes aren't supposed to be sweet so there's your answer.

pies aren't suppose to be sour either.

Back to square one we go.

Alright, thanks.

I guess I'll just try it whenever I get the chance. I suppose it can't hurt unless it ends up being super-expensive or something.
