i really hate the term, but for lack of a better word since english is such a limited language, i just wanted to put up a thread on trad clothing inspired by the shanghai book thing thread.

i just had a really fucking fabulous qipao made by the tailor who did the costumes for "in the mood for love" and now i'm planning a whole set of outfits by the dude. i've got another qipao to have made later, but for now, i really want to have men's cheongsams done.

how badass is that??? i already tried out some ready to wear men's cheongsam, and i have to say, i looked soooo gangster with my hair in a braid. but ready to wear is so blech, cheap fabric and it bunches up on the side, so i figure, might as well get it all tailored, i live in hk anyway.

i'm gonna have a really pimp version done: white silk satin with red dragons embroidered on the sleeves and a red lining on the inside.

i was thinking of getting a low-key version done just like the blue one or the beige one in a lighter fabric. but then i'm going to stick out so much anyway, and each cheongsam costs about USD800-USD1,000, i wonder if i should just go wild and only have pimped out ones made.

damn, i've never been so excited over clothes before, not even when i bought my aborted-lamb gucci fur coat. i can't wait to carry a fan around and sit with my legs apart ice-grilling people and smoking a cig while drinking my chai latte.

I tried to get a classic cheongsam when I was in Wuhan to wear to formal occasions because I was sick of wearing suits and tuxes, but the only ones I could find were not cut for me and used really crappy fabric. I think it was cheaper than you are looking at in Hong Kong, but then that is understandable! Anyway, the ones I found were intended for not-well-heeled "classic" musicians and I didn't have enough time to find a dressmaker to tailor one for me (when I asked some people in Wuhan, I was told that I would have to go to a dressmaker rather than a regular tailor). Toss a greatcloak or duster over it for inclement weather...

jeez wuhan is not known for its tailoring...!

i don't have a duster or greatcloak, but you know it's fairly warm here, i don't need one.

yeah, the tailor i go to is really expensive, but i figure, dude's been around since the start of civilization and he's genius, so he deserves my money. besides, you know, relatively speaking, USD800-USD1000 for a bespoke cheongsam is pretty cheap. i've bought clothes that cost twice as much off the rack, so *shrug*

but mmm, men in cheongsams are so fucking hot. i see these well-preserved uncles walking around sometimes in their winter cheongsams and canes and they are just so badass.

if you really want to be OG with it, then go for Hanfu.
apparently some people in China are trying to revive it. they want to bring sexy back.

dude, that will be cool if you get one with a rabbit fur collar, or ones that have fur at the seams. I saw it once in a kung fu movie (no joke), and it looks really badass.

hahah, i actually dig the black hanfu. i know about this movement, they had an exhibit last year.

nothing wrong with the hanfu, i'd wear it, too.

aiya, fur at the seams! theoretically, it's badass but it's soo hot here, i dont' want to be stinky after.

if i wear one in the US, stupid gweilos would probably think it's Japanese. but next time i go to HK, maybe we can both wear hanfu. i'll tuck in one of my arms and pretend to be 楊過, and you can be 小龍女.
