They finally got a Miss Korea who doesn't look like a stuffy librarian. It's about time. I see better looking racing girls than the the Miss Koreas in the past. Finally, they went with hot over "connected".
Miss USA is fine and she's rocking the Elvis. She's got my vote.
Damn Catty, I swear to god men and women aren't even close when it comes to judging this kind of stuff.

Weird things that happened so far:
Miss USA tripped? And she was booed by the entire audience. Or was that just me? What went on there?
And the translator for the Japanese was a hobbit...or was that also just me?
And the Asian guy who was one of the judges. Who was that? Was that the guy from Heroes? And that frickin' question...oh wait. That kinda makes sense why he was asking about superpowers.

LOL. What's with the ending???? They slapped the tiara on miss japan, threw the flowers on her and then just put up the credits. Are all Miss Universes like this?
LMAO. That seemed really weird.

Is this the first time we have a full asian women winning the crown?
I remeber Brooke something who was 1/4 Korean winning it a long time ago.
One think I notice about Miss Universe the top 5 were all minorities. No single pure Anglo Saxon on the list.

I'm sorry, but who cares?
I mean really, who in the general population truly cares one way or the other except for a passing drool?
I see girls everywhere who I find far more attractive, and I'm certain most others agree. I doubt anyone could reach an agreement, with all the resources and connections of the world, if they truly decided to determine who is the most attractive female.
I'm asking this genuinely, what is even the point, or stated definitions, for these competitions?

Yeah, there are almost 7 billion people in this world, half of whom are female... so unless they take all 3.5 billion women in this world and line them up together one-by-one, we'll never have a "most beautiful" female. And even if someone did try to do that, there'll still never be a consensus since as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

Considering that 'pure' anglo saxon makes up a tiny tiny tiny portion of the universe, that's not too surprising.
And no, I was not surprised to read Kwak make yet another comment pertaining to race.

No, Asian countries have won it in the past, including 2 by the Philippines, 2 by Thailand, 2 by India and now 2 by Japan. This year though there was what I call a noticeable "Asian fever" since four Asian countries made it into the top 15 (Japan, Korea, Thailand, and India). Philippines was one of the favorites but didn't make the cut. And both Korea and Japan made it into the top 5 although to be honest I thought Miss Korea was hotter than Miss Japan.

List of winners by country (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Universe#Winning_years_for_each_country).
Kwak, that was in 1997. You getting old, my friend.
Asia does seem pretty under-represented. But then not all countries have always participated and not all of them have made it into a national obsession like Venezuela. I also think in countries like Korea the contestants were largely there due to poltical ties rather than on beauty or merit. We've had some pretty homely Miss Koreas in the past. This year was a real change.
Look at Puerto Rico with 5 previous wins!

Don't most Korean girls have plastic surgery? But anyways, here's some pics of Miss Korea from her childhood days all the way up to her Miss Korea days so someone who has more experience than me can tell if she's had plastic surgery or not: http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=otrc3.jpg

I wonder, is there rhyme or reason with which words you choose to do caps and which you don't?
If it's any consolation, it's not like the ladies for the other countries were representative lookswise for their countries at all. I thought the black women stayed a little more true to how they actually look. Everyone else was just very watered down whites, and Tanzania was BALD!!. That was rad.

I've seen the pictures before and I just think her eyes get very large all of a sudden. Some people say she lost weight but i've never heard eye enlargement as a symptom of weight loss.

It happens to me. I have single-eyelids which have a little bit of fat in them, so my actual eye size does fluctuate with weight. Then there's also the shrinking of the cheeks, which make the eyes look larger in comparison. It's not drastic, but it's noticeable.

I lost 18 lbs recently. And at my size, that's a pretty large percentage.
Also, on an unrelated note, looking at the Miss Universe contestants made me realize how ignorant of geography I am. I didn't know some of the countries actually existed... =(

And kudos to Bahamas, Mauritius, Singapore, and Turks & Caicos (the girl was 5'3"!) for choosing "short" girls (read: sub-5'7"). Even though they didn't win, it's nice to see some deviation from the tall = beautiful mentality.

18lbs is a lot. I've lost 30 lbs before but I don't remember if there wree any facial changes besides just looking overall leaner.

It's sad when many of the non-white countries have contestants that appear more white than the majority race of their respective countries. It's also sad when some of these countries adopt Anglo-Saxon names and dye their hair and enlarge their eyes, straighten their hair, whiten their skin to appear more white.
Fuck Miss Universe. (figurately)

I kind of think that all such international judging is often pretty biased and corrupt. Figure skating for example. And I heard that Miss World and Miss Universe winners skew in different directions -- I forget which but one has more white winners and the other more non-white.
Anyway here's a taste of the Korean reaction.
http://koreabeat.wordpress.com/2007/05/30/wait-till-next-year/
As soon as the truth of this was announced, netizens across the world sent their encouragement to Lee Ha-nui and were breathless in their discontent. Their interest in whether or not she would win is gathered up more than at any other time. Until the end of the final round interest about who would win was amplified.
For this reason, netizens are pretty much in a rabid frenzy over the news of the fourth-place finish. One netizen wrote in reaction that “this is the power of a national power” and that he couldn’t understand how Miss Japan took first place. Also, allegations are surfacing about the pageant sponsor and profits made by Miss Japan.

I'm going to retract my last statement because looking at some of the countries that have very caucasian ideals like Norway and USA, their representatives were very ethnic looking.

This year's Miss Japan wasn't as hot as last year's Miss Japan (http://www.kurara-chibana.com/). It's hard to believe Miss Japan 2007 won the title, but kudos to her.
I think Miss Korea could have won it, but her answer to the "superpower" question was kinda wack... MISSIONARY POWER? eh?!

ALL of em were just too damn thin. Does the winner get a cheeseburger? I saw those pix of Miss Japan from last year... did she need the naked-ninja thing?
Congrats on Miss Japan for the win. Though I thought Miss Koreas pics look way hotter.

My goodness. The winner last year must have had some really good answers (other than "World Peace") to those questions...
