I'm home for summer break for a few weeks until I head back up to Boston to try to find a job (or because I can't stand my family).
Anyone in Houston want to hang out with a bratty college kid?

I was in Houston once. Last year as a matter of fact. Had my rental car shot at, lost a window. Cops wouldn't believe me and sort of hinted that I might have done it myself. The locals couldn't believe I called the cops, they thought that was quaint. You couldn't get me back to Houston unless the only other option was to go to St. Louis. Good luck and I hope you make it back out. Love Boston though.

Isn't LaiSteve66 in Houston?
I met a taxi driver in Mexico who sneaked across the border to work in Houston but hated it so much he turned around and went right back to Mexico.

I don't fucking blame him.
If anyone in Houston wants to meet up, I'm down. Ike, you're not 21 yet, are you?

Nope. =) And I don't have a fake ID because there is NO WAY I could pass for 21... even though I'm 20.

Lord, no. That's in Cypress, and I have to work there but I'll be damned if I'm going to hang out there.

I was in San Antone a couple years ago. Really enjoyed the cornbread and Latinos. Quite the un-Canadian experience.

Texas in general sucks. And yet it's the fourth-largest state for Asians after California, New York, and Hawaii. And I cannot for the life of me figure out why... seriously, why the hell are Asians moving to Texas?

Hey Ike, how is Houston anyways?
I've been doing some research and it seems like the job market there is really good and housing is still affordable (prays it stays that way until I come).
I heard that there are a bunch of Chinese stirp malls too and a lot of Chinese people which means it's perfect to bring my mom there. What is your take?

COST OF LIVING
I like Cali...except the cost of living sucks...the people are mean as hell here...there are too many grads for the amount of jobs...Cali is overrated.

Is traffic that bad? In Cali, traffic is also horrible. Many people live in stockton and commute 4 hours a day to work...simply because the bay area is unaffordable
at the same time, Stockton is becoming unaffordable!
BTW, the central valley Cali ranks up there in Smog rankings. Only the Bay Area isn't as bad.

Houston does have a very big and close-knit Chinese community, especially in the southwest area (Sugar Land). As far as traffic goes, as with all big cities, don't drive during rush hour. From where I am, it's about a 30 min drive into downtown.
As far as the weather sucking, people mostly stay indoors, so the heat and humidity are not that large of an issue. Flooding is more problematic, so make sure you don't move somewhere that floods badly.
Housing is probably not going to get unaffordable in the near future either. We have a lot of space.

The weather in Houston sucks. It sucks a lot. It doesn't matter if you stay indoors, you still have to drive to get anywhere and do anything, and that car AC does nothing for the sun. It's about a 40 min. drive from home to work for me; if I wear a watch in the car, I'll have a tan line there by the time I get to work. I spend as little time as possible out in the sun, and now I have a permanent farmer's tan. Yeah, it's still there in the winter.
The winter's not so bad, though. If you're from up north, you can walk around in a t-shirt while all the native Texans are bundled up like arctic explorers.
The only food I've had here that's better than the stuff in NY is the pho and crawfish. That's it. The peking duck is pitiful. There are no deli sandwiches here, only Subway and other equally shitty franchises, although there are a couple places with kickass Viet sandwiches. Some of the dim sum is decent. Forget about pizza. Every other place is a buffet. They have sushi buffets, man. Places with names like "Shogun." I've seen, like, two Korean eateries in Chinatown (which is just a commercial district) and the shittiest Korean joint in Flushing will put them to shame.
Not to shit on Houston, though. A lot of places here are pretty diverse; as much as I complain, I can live here. I can't live in Buttfuck, Alabama or any of those honkeytonk towns.

I heard the big Chinese/Taiwnese/Viet development is along Bellaire Avenue. Correct?

Ike, what the hell is your problem with Hojiminese? Everywhere I turn, I find you ragging on Hojiminese people. What did we ever do to you? Or do we just seem like an easy target for you? I'm shocked and appalled that the forum mods would allow this blatant racism and hate speech to continue.
And I'll have you know that some people happen to like a little love fuzz.

I'm as baffled as you are. I've lived in many places on this earth, and I can say with certainty that Texas is one of the most socially backward and closeminded places I've ever been. Having gone to college on the west coast of Canada (known for its extreme liberalism), the contrast with ultra conservative Houston can't be more apparent. It's definitely a shitty place for Asians and even shittier for interracial relationships (AM/WF). I can't wait until my chance comes to get the fuck out of this hot, humid, Jim Crow hell hole.
