View Full Version : What do these cars tell you about someone?

I'm thinking of trading in my 1996 Mercedes for a newer car and I've narrowed the choices down to the following:

Volvo S40
BMW 3-Series
Audi A4
Jeep Wrangler

I was reading a report where vehicles described peoples' personalities. What do the following cars tell you about someone?

While I can't say for sure, having a Jeep Wrangler says something WAAAY different than a BMW.

I'm sure it's around the following:

BMW: Yuppy clownshoe
Wrangler: Fun outdoors type guy

Wrangler: Poor clownshoe
BMW: Successful guy

One should buy a car based on what's important to you and what you want to do with it, not on what you think others think of you. Everyone has different perceptions of people who drive certain types of cars. People who buy a ridiculously expensive cars because of status are just silly.

A co-worker of mine absolutely HATES Mercedes drivers which I really don't understand, but I think it represents an economic class she has great disdain.

My two cents:
3 series Beemer: cheap prick with small dick. Biggest assholes on the road who can't drive.

Audi A4: boutique demographic who likes Swedish design. I find their personalities annoying but tolerable.

If I saw someone driving any of those cars, my first thought would be that they're impractical and overly influenced by brand names.

I drive a toaster though.

Interestingly enough, I was actually leaning towards the Wrangler because I just need something to get around in, I like the view from a higer vehicle, and I need AWD from time to time when winter sets in.

Is there any other reason for buying ridiculously expensive cars?

Hmm...good point.

The S40 isn't that expensive, anyway.

On the other hand, am I the only one who thinks that the Bentley is one of the ugliest cars on the road, especially for its price?

Looks like the S40 comes in AWD which is really nice option.

Bentleys were exactly the kind of car I was thinking of when I wrote about ridiculously expensive. They're made with really nice materials, but it's a lead sled and those headlights are awful. Whenever I see the front of a Chrysler 300, I keep on thinking it's a Bentley imitation.

Have you seen the new Volvo C30? I think that is coming out pretty soon. I think it's awesome and I love Volvo's floating dash. I'd WAYY take that over the S40. I'd say quite a few people would be legitimately called a snob for the volvo, but the group of owners is pretty small. It isnt anything compared to the legendary 3 series... lol

3 series drivers are a regular joke for me... typical 325i leasing douche with "gunmetal" (read brake dust) front wheels. I love BMW though but they are expensive, and the parts are even more expensive. I also really love the vintage stuff, like a 2002tii or an e30 but $$$. For a new one though, I just don't want to be associated with the previously mentioned leasing douchebags. German reliability has also gone to shit in the last decade (probably more like 2 decades). I read something about them now targeting reliability as surviving the typical lease length (like 3-4 years?) without major repair but I think that was just someone talking. Then again, BMW tried putting plastic water pumps on e36's. E36 m3's and first gen Z3's are also known to rip rear frames... LOL and people want to talk shit about American cars.

I'm also a big fan of Audi but lately, it just seems like everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. That's good for Audi, but i think the same type of leasing uppity douches are now getting audi's. They also can't pronounce it right either.

Wrangler? If you get a Rubicon => super offroader. It better have no doors, covered in mud, and on Super Swampers! Regular wrangler? I guess maybe light off roading / girls car.

has haldex awd gotten better? I think I've read too much into the snobbery about torsen and the audis...but I want the mechanical quattro of the 80s with the locking diffs..

yeah I also think there have been an increase of audi drivers, just like dijabutia mentioned with the bmw breakdust rims,

they also have europlates now too, too bad, I used to want one like 5 years ago before everyone in the mainstream had them.

I've read about the bmws and the ripping frames, saw an M coupe on a forum with a ripped frame. I thought it was all of the e30/e36 mixed framed cars with the semi trailing arms like the 318ti, z3 roadster/m roadsters

I thought the C30 only comes as a hatchback which I'm not interested in.

How *is* it pronounced? I've heard it OW-dee.

There's another way to say it?

People say AWW dee, in stead of AOU DEE; bothers me a lot!

Friends of mine joked about messing with Porsche people by telling them they had a nice porch uh (yes porch, like in front of your house).

I think one's attitude towards cars do tell something about people who acquires them. But even though I definitely have my opinion of people who drives the cars mentioned in the original post, but I will keep that to myself because I am in a good mood lately. I will use myself as an example.

From my previous post about the 1976 Jag, I will have to say that the way I look at cars are like the way I fall for women. Like the xj6/xj12 that I was looking at, they are classically beautiful, but there is something off-kiltered about them that I appreciate (ie: the 1976 jag looks like a regular jag on a anger binge, and it is made during the one year that the jag is temporarily bought out by another company--I forgot who-- and thus it doesn't have the trademark jaguar emblem). But most telling is that from the onset I know it is a doomed relationship(old cars, let alone a jag, are notoriously unreliable), it has a troubled history/baggage (as evident by the buy-out), but some sickness makes me rationalize my way towards them.

Sigh...

Dij!! Son!

I dont know where the BMer haterade came from, but dont drink it!! BMW aint cheap, but it aint too expensive for what you can get!! Unless things have changed since 2nd gen, M3s those are sold at a loss like PS3s. The idea being that people will want more BMWs after having some M3.

I used to own a POS 320i, but spent a month carsitting my friends M3. As responsive as a motorcycle!! Even spent from freeway miles handing some Porsche his lunch. If yer gonna compare M3s to Porshches...they oughta be in the same price range. Unless Im wrong, you could buy an M3 and still have enough money left to buy a 2nd cheap car before you hit Porsche pricing.

Though... as far as BMW pricks... SD has more than its share, but I think no worse than SUV, Ferrari, or Porsche pricks....

BMW stopped putting lsd's on non M cars with the E36. A diff for a E46 is $2000. That's about double from other cars ive seen, like a 240sx or a 350z. Then headeers, suspension parts, etc. The aftermarket part price are stupid expensive.

Oh without a doubt, they fuck you at the Drive Thru!

Thats why I never was able to make my 320 nice... aftermarket parts! OUCH!

Still, If I won the lotto Id proabably get a Ford GT (cause I could afford it when it broke down) and a Toyota FJ cruiser. (Are those rare in Cali?) I havent seen one here in Japan... theyve been out a while now...

Psh, whatevah son. My boy has a 325 and I'd gladly have people think I'm a yuppie douche if I could get that nice balance or handling, ride and luxury. And ironically, it's the Volkswagon group that has the most reliability problems.

You know you secretly will get a 1-series if it proves to be affordable and on FIYAH like ppl are saying.

Hah, key WORD is AFFORDABLE. I already bought a rwd car so I'm good for now =D. The next daily driver is going to be a diesel.

I heard the quality of all German cars have tanked. Mercedes Benz was at #3 a few years ago and is like #17 now.

Sucks since I just bought my dad an E350 about 8 months ago.

I think with VW and most german cars the reason reliablity tanks compared to the euro spec models may be all the added features americans want in cars, climate control, fancier electronics, etc all asking to break easily. Other than the whole coilpack issue, mechnically VW's are fairly solid.

but we should all be driving cars like this :D

I am LOVING the smart car. It's like the damn thing was made for ppl like me.
I'll either get the Smart or the Fit as the next car, but I love little hatchbacks. I still have my first car- a '93 civic hatchback, and that seared the love of hatchbackes forever in my brain.

Get a hybrid. It is good for the environment and also pretty decent in everything else. I got my first Hybrid and it has been pretty good so far. With soaring gas cost, I am a lot more green conscious these days.

I also owned multiple BMW 3's in the past. They are good handling cars in general. BMW really rip you off on options for cars. If you want a good deal, I would suggest Infiniti. I test drove Lexus' IS350 not too long ago and the car kicked ass. The handling was tight and it got plenty of horses. I got a 330 CI that I might want to sell soon. I am thinking maybe getting a Prius to replace it.

People who live their images through their cars are usually the one that gave cars bad names.

After so many cars, I just want a kick butt stereo and some decent horsepower when I need to pass people. Also, I don't want to feel sore after driving long distance.

My BF and I already have a hybrid, the Insight. It's a great car, but they don't make it anymore. :(
If they did, I would consider it.

I would LOOOVE to see a hybrid Fit.

I doubt that's coming, though. smart may be coming with an all electric version, so that may be an option for me. Either way, I can only afford a car under 15k since I'll be paying this on my own.

hybrid batteries => carbon footprint

Seriously, buy a used civic, crx, fiesta, geo metro, etc if you really want to save anything...

Yeah, if I didn't keep cars for fucking ever, I would buy used. I keep them so long that it's not a bad investment for me to buy new. I've had my civic for 14 years, I plan on keeping it for another 5 if I can. If I buy another car, I'll relegate the civic to my gardening/critter mobile.
