while i know that mental illnesses are very real and they do exist, i have a hard time swallowing a lot of the psych stuff that goes around in this society.
it came up on the other thread about the VT shooter but i didnt want to jack.
anyways i see it as a positive thing that many Asians ignore the mental illness hysterics. in the US there are whole classes of mental illnesses that do not even exist in other societies. its our own form of voodoo in American society, an invisible force that is causing us problems that only highly specialized doctors are capable of understanding and treating. spend an hour in his office and he will eat your paycheck and write you a prescription for a drug from his favorite company cuz they sent a hot rep that brought good BBQ to the office and little gifts here and there.
of course this sucks for those who really ARE mentally ill if their family refuses to recognize it. but i think it is rare. most people already know what their problems are and what will make them happy if they are unhappy.
how does a psych doctor deal with a patient whose main problem is suffering from RACIAL DISCRIMINATION? such a problem cannot be solved in any doctor's office. imagine if psych doctors were honest and began telling these types of patients that their main problem comes from being socially disadvantaged or oppressed. it would start total war. so it's better to make the patient believe that the problem is only in themselves.
the perception of mental illness in Asian families might start receiving some attention soon in a call to educate Asians about psychological problems. but i think we should be wary of accepting America's voodoo in total.
