View Full Version : What's a good weight loss goal?

It's getting dangerously close to summer, and I'm still fat. I'd like to set some goals to keep myself motivated to exercise and eat healthy.

I'm 5 ft tall, so what do you guys think of setting 95 lbs and 21" waist as my goals?

And no, I won't be devastated if I don't reach my goals. It's just nice to have them to aim for.

Personally I think 5' and 95 lbs, 21" waist is a bit on the small side, 100-105 lbs is totally reasonable... I remember when I was 5' and 100 lbs and a kid, I was skinny as hell, a pipsqueak. If you want 95lbs as a goal that you don't seriously plan in attaining, sure...

Thing is, if I set a goal that's too close to my current size, I'll just say f*** it, I don't need to lose weight.

Are you small framed and what is your current weight?

95lbs is pretty small.

I agree with minbo. You don't have to be one of those rails from HK!

But maogirl thinks I'm fat, and want to impress her terribly! =)

Aw, girl, I'm sure MG was being facetious when she talked about Asian chicks getting too "fat". I'm not skinny by any means either (being about 120 pounds on a medium-sized frame and I'm probably a little taller than MG), and I love my food too much to ever diet.

With that said, it's good to keep healthy by exercising regularly, eating well and not eating a ton of junk every day. You should lose the weight if the extra bulk is likely to give you health problems in the long run, and if it truly benefits you positively. No girl fits into a mass-produced dress size or body shape, so you shouldn't be emulating anyone else. It impresses no one at all if you're always unhappy about your size when it's actually healthy and just right for you. You should see a nutritionist first so that s/he can recommend a good exercise-and-food plan tailored for your body's needs, before going into any programmes.

cosign to jadedragon; i think it is sad, listening to women complain about being fat and having to lose weight just because they're aiming at some rail-thin impossible standard of beauty. curves are underrated, especially among asian women.

women who are healthy and exercise for that reason are pretty damn attractive, though.

I was friends with a girl, she was Korean, she was utterly convinced she was a hideous wildebeast. The only thing big on her was her rack. I mean she had the small body and this HUUUUUUGE rack. Apparantly big tits=big fatty to her. It was sad.

It was real sad because she literally had a barbie doll figure. Small waist, small hips, minimal ass, huge boobs. Like the perfect white girls dream. I would have died twice for her figure and she was convinced she was a digusting pig.

It's not a good idea to use weight as your goal, as it doesn't tell you how much of that is fat and how much is muscle. Aim to be healthy and fit instead. Setting goals like running X miles in Y minutes, Z times a week is more useful. Or if you want body measurements, get the measuring tape out and use inches as the unit, not pounds or kilos.

Whether a person is at the right weight for his/her size or not, it is always good to exercise regularly and eat healthily. Not sure how it works in America but here we just head to the gym and discuss a training and diet program with a personal trainer, then work our arses off. :D

I concur with others. Whatever you do, please don't aim for that anorexic standard. That's for celebrities with too much money and not enough brain cells.

Wow, I didn't even know someone could HAVE a 21" waist...

Yeah, missed that bit. That's like half way between the size of my arm and that of my thigh... Eat something and forget about it, woman! :D

Just be healthy. Don't eat junk food, or processed crap. Weight is not a good indicator, for various reasons. Muscle weighs more than fat. The human body is made up of water. Inches is a much better indicator.
My motto: Just be happy in a totally safe and healthy way. You are who you are afterall. The way you look on the outside, won't affect who you really are on the inside.

You should go by fitness level and body fat percentage. As a female, can you run two miles? Can you swim 500 meters? Can you do ten pushups? Can you place your palms on the ground without bending your legs? These are all reasonable measures of fitness for a woman. For bodyfat, unless you have expensive calipers, a practical way to measure is to pinch the fat around your waist. 1/2 inch to 1 inch is ideal. Can you pinch more than an inch? You need to drop 5-10 pounds depending on your body type. Can you pinch less than a half inch? You should make sure you're getting the proper nutrition. For a man, waist should be double in proportion to your neck. If you're neck is 17 inches, your waist should be around 34 inches. I think this one also holds for women but I'm not sure and in any case it allows for more deviation than the wasit pinch method.

10 pushups is easy.

But maogirl thinks I'm fat, and want to impress her terribly! =)

tsk, i can't be impressed. only one person ever has but he has the demonic ability to make me menstruate on command, so it's kind of hard to be unmoved.

anyway, so what, you're fat, big deal. it doesn't make you a horrible person, just fat. i hate my body, but i accept it, i don't mind making fun of what i look like 'cause it's not like i can deny it anyway.

i don't know, maybe i'm just too arrogant, but i've never understood looking or acting a certain way to impress other people. no other person's opinion matters as much to me but my own.

also, what's the point of having a goal if you don't actually plan to reach it? you might as well say you're just going to exercise and eat better and see what happens.

if you're going to really commit to a drastic weight loss, then just go for anorexia. you can grow hair on your face, bruises on your ass and permanently fuck up your intestines like me. it's fun living on the verge of
death everyday!

ps incidentally, there's this huge debate going on in the papers about whether or not hk stores discriminate against fat people and you can't imagine the number of aggrieved gweipos writing in saying, "back in the UK, i'm not fat, but i can't buy a size 16 here! stores should stock more small sizes!"

size fucking 16??? cotdamn, bitch, that means your waist is only a couple of inches less the size of my torso. you could clothe a fucking hk family with a size 16, what the fuck do they expect?

10 pushups is easy.
Straight legs, off the knees?
Anyway, I'm talking minimal fitness standards, not uber-dominatrix standards ;)

But I don't wanna be fat! It's gross!

maogirl

being human is gross in itself. we shit, eat, have boogers, pee, age, etc.

if you want to stop being fat, do it for yourself.

seriously, you rely on people's opinions too much. this must be from being an american teen. double adolescent.

OK this thread is fucking stupid. It's more about somebunny wanting attention rather than about actually needing help losing weight. I genuinely feel bitter for having lost time reading this thread.

LOCKED you festering assholes.
