sorry, but i have no associated article, but this is "man on the street" stuff--

Maybe it depends on where you live, but for every Asian youth i see that is influenced by hip-hop (dress, talk, mannerisms), i see TEN that have eye-liner, skinny jeans, spiked belt and hair, wearing Vans or "emo-punk".

here's a definition of "emo": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo_%28music%29

some, but not all, 'conservative' Asians complain/worry about the effects of hip-hop on Asian youth because of its flaunting of violence and misogyny, but what are the effects of emo-punk? Is it similar to hip-hop on the Asian community?

Is it dangerous for Asian youth to emulate the style of European (White) bands?

Are drugs involved in choice of lifestyle?

Is "emo" given a pass because it's mainstream, or because it's...um...White?

hah. hip hop is mainstream, too, you know. but only the shitty hip hop. the good hip hop will never really be mainstream.

You're right: Hip Hop is "mainstream". I believe 75% of people who buy Hip Hop CDs are White Males between 18-30.

I actually listen to some Emo as well as Trance, Hip Hop, Alternative, Classical, anything that sounds good.

I just brought up this topic in a tongue-in-cheek manner because i feel that all examples of Hip Hop may be villianized because fans of it take on the fashion, slang and lifestyle that is expressed by that musical genre, while i see just as many or even more non-White youths (particularly Asians in my area) mimicking the Emo fashion and lifestyle and nothing is said about it.

I just feel that Hip Hop may be villianized and is an easy target because it is associated with Blacks while Emo may be considered benign because it is associated with Whites.

To me it's ironic and solely based on my personal observations, that's all.
