View Full Version : So why are the Bakers considered racist?

I apologize if this isn't in the right place.

A) The Bakers are obviously taking care of and like(if not love) a little Chinese girl. This does not strike me as very racist behavior, considering the fragile evidence there is for them being racist has them being racist towards Chinese/Asians.

B) While the court may well have been racist, this is not a reflection on the beliefs of the Bakers.

C) They haven't tried to make her stop thinking she's Mexican, last I heard. I'm sure a racist wouldn't be happy if one of their 'children' called herself a Mexican. Hee.

There's not much evidence that they aren't racists, but there's less that they are. Aside from the obvious bit of trying to take Anna Mae from the Hes(which was, in all likelihood, fueled by wanting Anna Mae than having any anti-Chinese bias), when have they demonstrated any sort of hostility(or indeed, entered into any sort of non-He related) against Chinese/Asians?

I could be wrong, but I'm not seeing much evidence for the Bakers themselves being racist.

I hope this topic didn't stem from my topic about the facebook group. If that was the case, I didn't imply that the Bakers themselves racist and I just reread what I wrote just to be sure. If it still somehow seemed like I implied it, how? I'll change whatever seems off.

Anyways I've read some synopsis's of the court cases and Judge Childers and I think one of the attorneys for the Bakers were the ones that were using racism as a means to keep Anna Mae. I wish I had time to divulge but I got a big ass paper due for my class soon >_<.

Please see my response to your question in this thread:

Briefly, racism takes many forms; I as a white person can take care of my prize little black kid or China doll and still be racist. I as a white man can marry an Asian woman and still be racist. Showing some type of "love" for a person of a certain race is no guarantee of non-racist behavior.

It's also telling that even though the Bakers claimed that they were sensitive to Anna Mae's Chinese heritage, she no longer eats the food and would prefer to be Mexican over Chinese. That shouldn't come about with parents who are actually sensitive and respectful of her ethnicity.

Also, if you could all leave comments in the comments section of the blog for everyone (and not just forum lurkers) to see, that'd be great!
