sorry, no link for this 'cause the south china mornign post is a bitch.
ah shit...sorry, some 18 year old ABC just tried to talk to me. BAHAHAHA...he asked me if i was high school, and i was like, "back in 1992"
anyway, the gist of the article is:
The number of caucasians in Hong Kong has dropped 20 percent ove the past five years to about 36,400, sparking suggestions that the former British colony is starting to lose its appeal to western expatriates.
A human resources management expert attributed this partly to the growing reluctance of Hong Kong employers to pay fat packages to expatriates, and a legistlator called on the government to do an in-depth study.
blah blah stats
Garek Hui, a past president of the Hong Kong People Management Association said, of the falling white population, "Maybe jobs in Hong Kong have become less attractive. But on the other hand, there are many Asian talents on the market. The competition has become keener."
Legislator Emily Lau said Hong Kong's image as an internation city could be damaged if the trend was not stopped. "I am not saying that we have to ahve a lot of white people in Hong Kong to make it an international city. But if we have fewer of them here, that might be an issue we have to look into."
first off, i hate how they always call this place a former brit colony. fucking gweilos always have to rub it in. and needless to say, emily lau is a pro-democracy supporter. stupid cow, we need to have studies done on the needs of south asian migrants, who the fuck cares about gweilos? she'd rather have a bunch of gweilos in hk than other asian ethnicities. she is a total colonial bootlicker, she once petitioned the UK to grant brit citizenship to all hk BNO passport holders. fucking bitch should just leave hong kong. too bad she didn't die in the arson attack on her office.
i fucking one star her fucking life.
but other than that, i'm happy with how things are going. :)

Of course it's because HK isn't good enough for them anymore.
Legislator Emily Lau said Hong Kong's image as an internation city could be damaged if the trend was not stopped. Haha!

shame on Emily Lau. she falls into the same mental trap that many HKers fall into, that white == international. this same mentality also explains why many ads in HK feature white people.

This complements China's push toward being a international superpower nicely. Hong Kong is going to remain an international city regardless of what the population is simply because of its position. If your a valuable asset in the world, your image won't really matter cuz ppl are gonna need your ass. Haha.
But for some reason, I dont think decline is gonna last long.

Wish this was true in other parts of Asia. Don't mind seeing the expat community growing less in Thailand or the Philippines .

Y'zzur. Less expats in the Philippines means less expats making an ass of themselves on Wowowee.

Booooo on whoever this Emily Lau character is. They should make a new campaign promoting the news just like a food product ad.
"HONG KONG... NOW WITH 20% LESS GWEILO!"

^A w1nn4r is you.
I think the decline of whites isn't a major problem at all. If it's an international city, it's an international city. If less whites come, that's fine. If it becomes a non-international city, well, that's fine too. I'm really not seeing where the concern comes from, although perhaps I'm just being too apathetic about this.

But... but... but... don't you see? It's white people! It's like vitamins! Why would anyone want less vitamins? It makes no sense!!!!! You need vitamins to survive, and to boost performance. White people are vitamins for Hong Kong.

actually a lot of HK's business comes from its image of being international. although in recent years a lot of business has shifted toward the mainland. so i do believe HK needs to remain an "international" city. Emily Lau's mistake is really that she thinks white == international. but besides building better business relations with the rest of the Pearl River Delta, HK needs to look at places like India, the Middle East, maybe Brazil, etc. Emily Lau and a lot of HKers just don't equate darker skin or other Asians with an "international" image, or at least not as much as they do with whites.

I think it might have to do with the proximity of it; for example, if the US deals a lot with Canada and Mexico, it's still an international relationship, but it might not be considered as blatantly international as, say, relations with China.
Although you're probably right about the 'international image economy' thing.

i don't know about proximity. i think partly it's plain racism, and partly it's because white faces have dominated global trade so much for, well, the past several hundred years, really.

Something to consider is where all those gweilos are going. And a lot of them are washing up on the shores of Shanghai.

yes and no. sure enough a lot of westerners are going to Shanghai to do business, and a lot of business is moving away from Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta to Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta. but a lot of the westerners that were in HK were FILTH - "Failed In London, Try Hongkong" - because HK was British friendly, and because they could actually make more money in HK than they probably could in the UK, even if they weren't working for a multi-national company. even today, Hong Kong's per-capita GDP is higher than that of the UK.
the same condition does not exist for Shanghai. it's not a British colonial government there, and you'd likely starve if you just try to land there and then find a job locally if you don't speak Chinese. most of the westerners that go to Shanghai were assigned there by their employers.

I think non-Asians should not be allowed to reside in China. This is like Mexicans coming over to the USA, looking for work and stealing all of the jobs. The Mexicans end up residing in America permanently.
This is a good article that shows that times are changing. Maybe there'll be fewer Westerners hitting on Chinese girls in the clubs.

Bienvenidos, mexicanos. I spent a lot of effort learning Spanish and the more Mexicans there are here, the better my job opportunities.
I usually like to stay away from negative interactions on forums but right now I feel the need to make my feelings clear... Millerboy, you're a complete peckerhead and your signature is pissing me off. My niece has a white mother and a black father and she's not "a problem". I'm putting you on ignore.

well, you write his or her username on a piece of paper. then whenever you come back to this forum and you click on a thread, go over the usernames on the piece of paper, and whenever one of those usernames appear on the thread, use your hand to cover up the portion of your monitor that is the posts that were made under that username.

Okay, obviously you didn't listen to me when I schooled your ass in the Geisha Wtfever One Of Our Own Selling Us Out To Give The White Men Some Wood book review thread. I suppose its because I hurt your chubby little emo feelings or something.
But you know, others were trying to drop some knowledge on your foolhead in a polite speech but you were pretty g'ddamn stubborn about listening to them so fuck all that noise.
Are you listening now? THE PROBLEM LIES NOT BECAUSE WHITE PEOPLE ARE LIVING IN CHINA. The problem is why they are drawn to stay there, the fact that due to colonial mentality and the racist hierarchy left by the British that is still practiced there that is giving these expatriate white people chances, opportunities and all the good shit to give them a far better life in Asia than in Europe because they've got the badge of the privileged white skin.
Some of these expats are living in fucking MANSIONS, when in their own home countries they would never be able to afford to do so, or at the very least have the opportunity to acquire a mansion and other high status materialistic markers.
FYI, the Mexicans/US analogy is grossly, GROSSLY inappropriate in regards to trying compare that with white people in Asia. Mexicans have to struggle and toil and break their backs trying to get something, like I don't know, money to feed their family and help their other relatives back in Mexico. Sometimes it gets so either they finally get to a good place and they want to stay and become naturalized citizens, or it gets to where some set of circumstances can't let them go back to Mexico.
White people in Hong Kong however... Do a vaaaaaaast majority of them come to Asia to help out their families back home? FUCK NO. They come here to live the good life with little to no effort. They come here to bask in the opportunities granted to them not because they're actually qualified or some shit, but just because their skin is white, their eyes are round and their hair is not black.
Sex slaves and bargirls do not count because that shit is not exclusive to Asia, that shit is everywhere.
...Hotdamn. Really now. To adjust a favorite quote of mine:
"WHITE PRIVILEGE, MOTHERFUCKER. DO YOU KNOW IT?"
