Welcome aboard nskripchun! My sister has a masters in education. Even with the high standard of living here in orange county, she still doesn't make that much. She's considering an alternative degree where she can really apply herself and make some moola. If you honestly love working with children and teaching, it's the way to go. Otherwise, keep other options open.

yep, teaching is definitely an underpaid profession... but i guess after working a bunch of different jobs during and after my undergrad, working with kids was the most meaningful.
hopefully i can leverage the fact that i'm a guy to get the best possible placement. There's not too many guy elementary school teachers. >.<

There's a good reason for that. While a lot of men don't like working with children, there's also a lot that are afraid of being accused of being pedophiles. American society doesn't really trust adult men with young children.
Of course, don't let that discourage you.

^yeah, that's a huge issue.
every state has pretty strict procedures, especially mandatory background checks. I've already been fingerprinted and filled out 159016516 forms to prove that I'm not a bad guy.

At least you get summers off and benefits up the wazoo. Those seem to be the best perks that my sister enjoys. I give you props. Personally, I can't stand kids... other people's kids that is.
