Anyone here have a PSP or DS or both?
I decided to buy a PSP because of its ability to play movies along with games, music, and photos. I ocassionally travel and the PSP serves as a great portable entertainment system. If I want to listen to music or play a game or watch a movie while waiting to get on my plane, I can. My gf got one also and so did 2 of my coworkers. They watch movies during their lunchbreak.
Some people criticize the PSP because its list of games is small. But so far, I don't have a problem with that because I like the games that are out just for the PSP. For example, you've got Burnout Legends--an insane auto racing game with a great soundtrack and Bleach which has incredibly impressive graphics and animation. Coming out in October is the controversial Grand Theft Auto made just for the PSP.
If you're thinking about getting a portable entertainment system, I'd definitely recommend the PSP.

Sign me up Fan.
Just walked in the door with a PSP. Not too jazzed about the fact that it hasnt been chipped yet (if ever...safely). And Im hoping not to run into the square button problem, or the dead pixel problem. The shop I bought from is really really small time. (Its a bookstore/DVD/CD/Game/Game hardware shop. So if I run into issues I'll have to cart it to Sony directly. Living in San Diego, that meant a drive across town.
Living in Miyazaki Japan means sending to Tokyo.
Anyway I just returned a Game Boy Advance that I bought. It was an earlier generation unit and I was pretty dissapointed with the screen and ergonomics. I understand that it wasnt designed with large men in mind, but I tried playing "Xevious" one of my arcade faves back in the day... fingers cramped up after a few minutes. Also the A/B buttons werent well suited to dropping bombs and shooting air to air (lasers?) at the same time. This was a technique I used in the arcade to fly through levels. But on the GBA I couldnt get past the first boss. I gave it 2 days, but then when I went REALLY shopping for used games... I found that anything WORTH playing (even OLD-ASSED Tetris...) cost about 3900 Yen. Thats only about $6 cheaper than a new PSP game!!! The whole point of buying GBA was to save money on my portable gaming fix!!!
I packed it back up and went back to the shop to get the PSP.
I dont have any games for it yet. Im thinking lumines to start. So far it looks like the better RPG games are text heavy. That will slow me down plenty... yet another incentive to keep studying Japanese eh?
Note to anyone looking to import from Japan... the UMD movies will not play region 1 (North American) flicks, but will play ALL games. Also the system software can be changed to English, just like on the iPod. Simple flip of the switch. So that means the menus will be in English... but if you buy Japanese games, they were programmed with J-text, so you will get Japanese in-game text.
Also... has the white PSP been released stateside yet? Its all the rave over here... but its also about 10,000 Yen more than the black one.

I've played with both and the PSP is definitely way better.
The screen is amazingly clear!

I have a DS and loving it.
The dual screen's IS kind of gimmicky but it's useful in Advance Wars and going to be useful in Castlevania.
The touch screen definitely is NOT a gimmick as many other people say though. There's a ton of things you can do now with the touch screen instead of without. Games like Meteos would be unplayable with the D-Pad and buttons (It gets really fast paced) and there could be a ton of other things developers have yet to try for it.
Also being able to play GBA games is nice (WarioWare Twisted is the best game ever)
Uh that's it I guess. We all have our own tastes though

Went to the shop and came back Lumines.
Just played the first game (spent a while importing CDs on iTunes...) It looks pretty good. Theres a lot of information about this thing to digest. Gonna get back to it.

Got a DS a few weeks ago and lovin' it. A year ago I wouldn't have even considered a DS because it seemed like the touch-screen capability seemed like a gimmick to me, but with the release of Kirby, Meteos, and Nintendogs, it definitely provides new levels of interaction in gaming. What I like most about Nintendo's strategy with it is that they are making it appeal to traditional non-gamers, such as women and older folks.
If they succeed, it will be welcome in my book as it will make the medium more diverse, and bring some much needed creativity back into the industry. Sorry but gamer geeks have no right to bitch about women not liking games when the ones that feature them portray all the girls having D cup sized breats, and wearing the equivalent of dental floss for "armor".

The only way I'll get a DS (over a PSP) is when Legend of Zelda comes out :)

You know, I actually understand why you don't like comics now.

I have both. I bought them both a couple months after they came out. I played some GBA games on the NDS for a little while, but it's just sat in the corner since.
The PSP has much more multimedia power. The screen is absolutely amazing. The games aren't too bad either. They need to come out with some more RPGs for both systems. There are a few Japanese PSP ones, but I can't read them.
I'm getting a 2GB MS Duo hopefully in a couple weeks.

The games on PSP will get better since now developers understand the restraint on using a portable device.

I think the white one comes out in November. I'm not all that interested in that color; it reminds me of an ipod. Black just looks sleeker.
I've heard Lumines is an excellent game to have for the PSP. I may eventually get it, but I'm gonna wait and spend some more cash on more action or sports games. I'm currently not that heavily into RPG games cuz they take too long. And I like leveling up my character in certain spots before progressing with the story so that makes playing even longer. I bought Untold Legends, a hack and slash rpg. I enjoy it because it's like being able to play Diablo on the go, but because of its repetitiveness I wouldn't recommend it unless you're hardcore for that game genre.
I've seen a list for upcoming PSP games and there are a ton of games on the way ranging in variety from a strategic Lord of the Rings game to Street Fighter Alpha to Sims.
When it comes to the Sims, I think the DS has a slight advantage in that it allows another dimension of participation in creating and controlling your Sims world. For example, you're able to draw/write whatever you want when a Sims character creates a painting by using the touchpad.
I don't envy the possible capabilities of a dual screen since all of the games I'm interested in would have no need for a touch pad. However, IF a World of Warcraft portable version were made, I could see it being more easily handled on a DS. The graphics would look better on a PSP, but that's just my bias talking.

you sound like you might be a PSP man...? (you havent stated it (that Ive seen))
BTW all I was WAY off on the price of the white one. The black one I was looking at was used and so, cost WAY less that the white one (comparing apples to oranges). In any case if anyone wants to buy one, feel free to email me and we can work it out at no profit. All the electronic shops are way close to me and are well stocked in white as well as black PSPs.
The system software switches to English as easily as switching your iPod (just choose "English" from the menu. It'll play all games it just wont play UMD. But for me thats a non issue. Im not trying to rebuild my DVD library on UMD format at the cost of $40 per UMD!!! (I rarely pay $20 for a DVD!!!) I'll wait until I can rip DVDs and shunt it over to a 1 or 2 GB memory stick in the PSP and watch flicks that way.
Im goint to stop posting now and return to Lumines... cant stop. Ive been losing mad sleep by going to bed at 4-6 am the last few days. Wife is pissed, bodys tired, but cant stop... Lumines Lumines Lumines.
All in all, Im VERY glad I took back that GBA and went PSP. I only paid about 1900 yen ($15) for Lumines! (used). Yeah, they got used PSP gear here already... whats freaky is the weird video game gear they got here that they never sold in the US... I might haveta start another thread for it and bust some pics off the cell phone

On an E3 clip, I saw what looked like a see-through mini keyboard for the PSP. Have you seen it?
