not hiphop, but rap music. can they really make it? to become a successful rap artist, it seems like you have to have all this street credibility, sell drugs, gang bang, etc. to even get a listen in the community. take a look at jin for example, he's probably one of the illest "battle rappers" in the game, yet, do the rap community really give a damn or bought his album? no. im not trying to discourage anyone because i know theres quite a few asians trying to make it in the rap game. but just sayin.. the rap genre just isnt built for non-blacks. eminem only sold because the majority in america is white.

But most of the black rappers out there nowadays never sold drugs or gangbanged either. They just fake it & sell the gangsta image cuz that's how you come up in the game. Jin's album flopped cuz he doesn't know how to write songs, despite his battling skillz.

Because it's mostly white boys and girls buying rap albums, I doubt AA rappers can really make it to the top of the charts like Ludacris or Lil Wayne for example...no matter how talented they are. White kids most likely will never even hear of Chan or Far East Movement and they only know Jin because he was on 106 and Park. The fixed mindset that only blacks and some whites can be good rappers will be the norm for a long time. Otherwise, FM would have gotten a deal quite some time ago. Plus rap music is in what some people call its dying days, which isn't that big of an exaggeration considering the shit that gets played these days. The most popular rap songs will continue to be one hit wonder club dance records and southern rap songs which all have similar beats and terrible lyrics.

eminem didn't just sell because he was white, he sold so much because he was white. he sold because he's a good lyricist with a rhyme scheme that isn't used in rap these days. there are plenty of white rappers out there that will never sell because they simply suck. it also didn't hurt that eminem had the backing of dre and that when eminem came out, he was the first of his kind (meaning no white rapper before him used his style or lyrical content).
asian rappers don't sell because they don't promote to the masses. they also don't typically fall into the categories which made rap so big to begin with. that meaning most asian rappers didn't come from poverty or had it hard growing up. if white people buy the majority of rap albums, asian rappers aren't going to stand out in any kind of way. all it'll do is remind the white folk of the smarter kid who sits next to them in class.
jin didn't sell because he's not a writer. he's only a battle mc. i mean, even now, this many years into the game, some of his rhymes are still way to simplistic.
it also doesn't really help that rap already has a style which was created by black people. when asian rappers come out talking or dressing like traditional rappers, it just sounds and looks copied.
so i don't really think it's just because of ethnicity, it's a lot more complicated.

Rap music is more mainstream now but it is still seen as "black" music. And the animosity between the black and asian community prevents a lot asian from being backed by the black community. On another part of the board someone made the comment about some designers clothes "and I thought black people made some ugly clothes". Offhanded racist comments like that show the mindset of a lot of the asian community towards blacks and we are not so quick to let people who hate us get a little shine in musical genre that is still dominated by black artists. Think about how you feel about the racist chinese rap videos. That's the feeling a lot of us get when we see asians rapping (personally I'd die for a chance to touch Teddy Park of 1TYM but that's another thread). But the offhanded racism that's thrown at us (and I read it on this board all the time and the comments are just glossed over even though this board is supposed to be anti-discriminatory or is that just towards asians) doesn't make us all that ready to accept asians spittin game.

Racism between asians and blacks cuts both ways. There is just as much racism by blacks against asians as the other way around. Also, you can't compare white-against-asian racism with asian-against-black racism. I think the white privilege thread does a good job of explaining why.

You read anti-black shit on this board "all the time"? We just gloss it over? I don't recall all that much at all, and generally when someone spits something stupid we call them on it. That's not a fair criticism. Let us know who the general perpetrators are and tell us about it next time.
And let's not forget, Asians aren't the ones going around beating black delivery boys to death or robbing black restaurants and corner stores or rioting and looting black businesses, huh?
As for acceptance in mainstream North American rap, Jin did genuinely have a shot, and who knows what happened behind the scenes, but the content on his first album was terrible. And don't forget, they got him Kanye, Twista, Wyclef, Lyfe Jennings, it was a pretty damn star-studded album, and it failed miserably. And you can't just blame it all on the lack of marketing, 'cause I heard the album and it was weak. As for anyone else, it's going to be difficult for a while to come, as we lack the "street credibility" in America's eyes.

I wouldn't deny Asian vs. black racism exists (and vice versa), in fact it should be confronted whenever possible... but I don't see a lot of it on this board.
The clothing comment, in context, was basically "and white people say black people dress funny, but look at how these white people are dressing their Asian kids". As usual on this board, the vast majority of vitriol is directed at (drumroll) other Asians! White people come in a very distant second, with maybe 1% of it at everyone else.
I think blaming other Asians so much is kind of pathological. I do it too much myself.
And now I just blamed myself for blaming another Asian (myself) so I'd better stop before this post implodes.

That's crime that's reported. I work at Chino Prison in Chino California and the criminal justice has a hard time investigating asian to asian crime because so much of it goes unreported. Including a current case where an asian couple were killed (not trying to be secret agent but of course I can't blab too much) but it was brutal and the investigation is turning up ties all the way back to asia but the asian community isn't cooperating with the investigation so it's hard to prosecute right now. And that's not to mention all the robberies especially with older people because they keep so much cash at home but don't want to prosecute the offenders because they are asian. That's not splashed all over the news.
As for jin. As star studded as that album was he was steered wrong by the first video. A scene full of every chinese stereotype, chinese restaurant, kung in the kitchen, what the hell was that about. And the single Learn Chinese that was just stupid. We know your asian now hit us with something else. he's talented and so were the producers but they went the wrong route.

Im going to have to agree with PhoenixRisen. I think that most black people have a certain image of asian people in there mind. And sadly that image dont include having rythm, gangstaness <--if thats a word:o or aggresiveness. So I think its just the fact that maybe they just wont be takin seriously. Asian gangstas to me is sssooo baby cute. it makes me want to pinch there cheeks for some reason:p ( but some is ssooo sexy too). Also not being known for being aggresive some black people in the industry might try to take advantage of them. If they have talent and can show just as much aggression as black folks i think they can make it. but I think they can do really good in R'N'B. this is one of my fav groups. if noone know who they are there name is BiG Bang. they are so cute *drools*

I can tell anyone of you this that "Asian Gangsters" are far from cute. I myself use to be associated with a lot of Kats that belonged with gangs up in South central. These Kats are as serious and as dangerous as any other gangs. Not to mention they roll thick and they all carry heat. I myself have been shot when shit was going down and their is nothing cute about that...
I will be keeping my mouth shut about Asian gangs cuz it is really something I am not proud about, but I am also glad I have gone through that in my life..
As far as Asian hip-hop a lot of them have a shit load of talent such as Roy Kim and hell even Jin. I know these Kats are making a name in the Rap community and they have a lot of respect with the black community...
If you really wanna know about the hood, let me know I will show you how Cute Asian Gangsters can be..
