I'm also looking for some good Asian music to put on my iPod...I've got almost 10,000 songs, but very little Asian stuff - some Cantopop and some J-pop. But I'd like some *real* Asian music - no western-influenced pop or hip-hop crap.

Any suggestions?

I enjoy listening to gagaku- which is old-school Japanese court music from the 16th century and prior. The soundtrack from Hero (esp the chess scene) was phenomenal.

I'm a big fan of percussion. I like to listen to Taiko drumming and from time to time Gamelian Gong music. I really like Baka (the African water drum) also, but that is really hard to find and more to the point of this post, not Asian...

If you like percussion also, you could try The best of Kodo, a fairly well known Taiko drum group.

Thanks for the suggestions. I downloaded some Kodo and the Hero soundtrack as well as some traditional stuff from China and Japan. I've got the Gamelian Gong music queued.


There's not much Asian stuff on torrentspy. There used to be a lot on WinMX, but they got shut down recently (though it might be temporary, as they're moving offshore). Anyone know of a good source for Asian torrents? The sites are probably all in Asian languages.

No, I meant that the websites for downloading Asian music are written in characters, so I can't read them.

Limewire has quite a bit of stuff, but only individual songs, not entire albums.

baidu just find the name of the singer in characters and search from there and randomly download...thats what I do...

There's a Pakistani singer called Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - BIG guy! You've probably heard some of his stuff before on movie soundtracks like 'Dead Man Walking'. He has an incredible voice. He died recently....but his music lives on!

1. Jay Chou. You can't go wrong with any of his albums. Jay songs I like are "Ke Ai Nu Ren", "Fa Ru Xue", "Qian Li Zhi Wai"
2. Gary Cao aka "Cao Ge". Download "Liang zhi lian ren", "Superwoman" (that track is truth)
3. Wang Li Hong aka Wang Leehom. He's an ABC and a bit of a tool, but "Hua Tian Cuo" is a great Chink&B track.

Gook music:
1. RAIN. A brutha trapped in a gook's body. This guy is thee shit. Download his 3rd album... NOW.
2. Hyolee. I don't really like her music, I just want to hump her.
3. Download the soundtrack to "My name is Kim Sam Soon". Those gooks are untouchable when it comes to heart-wrenching ballads. *sniff*
4. Wheesung. Get "Good bye luv" and "With Me"

Nip music:
1. CHEMISTRY. I'm comfy with my sexuality to admit that I enjoy their songs. "Itoshii Hito", "Two As One", "Mirage in Blue"
2. Ken Hirai. "Hug"
3. YOSHIKA. "Call Me", "Just Us"
