Friday afternoon, I was waiting for something to finish up and so I decided to install Ad-Aware on some of the computers in my lab. Most of the computers are hooked up to equipment. I installed and started the program on the computers.

Most of the time, I see 50-200 hits on a computer, depending on if the computer was ever scrubbed and who tended to use it. This one computer surprised me, it got over 2000 hits and 1900 of the hits were from one folder. It was like looking at the display in Times Square showing the US national debt, the numbers were rolling so quickly.

Freaked out with the possibility that I had a seriously infected computer, I looked over the files and they predominantly tracking cookies from one user on the computer. The user was an undergraduate who worked with us for one summer. We actually paid him something like $10/hr. I was so pissed.

He was such a brown-nosing premed who only did this for the money and his resume for med school, hated the little white fucker. His wife was pregnant at the time and he was such a pig, never spending any time with her. And now I discover he was looking at nasty internet porn on our computers! Anal, swedish, britney spears, under18, sorority girls, UGH! and we were paying him precious dollars and got nothing out of that lazy, stupid shit. I had a family emergency during that summer and I wasn't around, but I am just baffled with 1900 hits in a span of about 2 months.

I understand that guys have needs and if your wife is pregnant, you may not get as much nookie and porn might help some guys. But do you have to do it on a work computer? Especially when your supervisors tell you not to use the computers for porn or internet gambling? We're a state school and if this got out, we could get into trouble. I've got to disinfect the keyboard and mouse for that computer on Monday. Ewww.

I haven't gotten rid of the cookies yet, but I was thinking of printing them out and sending them to his wife if their address in the student directory is still valid. Or talking to some people who know him and have them blab it to their mutual friends. Just to let him know that we know what he did 2 summers ago. Anybody have any good ideas to add?

But I was wondering how common this is in most people's workplace? It would seem pretty stupid to look at porn at work with all the survelliance software that's out there for network admins to use. What if you got a boner at work and someone wanted you to come (very bad pun) into their office?

Sign him up for all kinds of mailing lists, both snail mail AND email :P

I'm sure his wife will be impressed when he gets his first shipment from the Dildo of the Month club, or his first installment of Well Hung Transsexual Hookers video series. Or since he's a white guy, Love Doggie Style and Animal Farm.

The guy sounds like a real pig. Ick. $10/hr to surf for porn was probably his dream job.

And what the hell is pre-med anyways? Here in Canada, you are either in medical school, or you are not. Is that an actual program? I don't understand it. If you are pre-med, does that mean you are guaranteed to get into medical school? If not, then its like me running around saying I'm a pre-billionaire or something like that.

Let your supervisor/s know that you did a spyware scan on the computers because you noticed some were really slow. And then show a printout of the cookies list and tell your supervisor that a lot of these cookies are inappropriate for your work place and suggest that notes be placed near the computers that they only be used for work related material and NOT PORN!

And even though his wife might not care that he looks at porn at work, find his parents' address and send them the cookies list! JK! But still, save the cookies print out just in case you need some ammunition against this guy one day.

Ooh, I think the address in the student directory is his parents' address.

I did tell my supervisor about this and he was not pleased about it at all. We've always had this attitude that we want people to be productive and active contributors to projects and stressed that research is not summer camp. We used to make a light joke about not using the computers for porn and gambling because it was kind of a touchy subject, but you bet your booties we're going to make it clear that it's not acceptable with the new people with a dead serious face. We'll drop them like a load of bricks.

He was only with us for a summer and graduated with his undergraduate degree in biology this past May. I don't know what med schooll he got into if he got into one. If I never see him/hear from him again, I would be very happy.

Premed is just a description of someone who ultimately wants to go to medical school, they are generally biology majors. Many are fine people with good intentions to heal the sick, but many are point grubbers who do things like volunteer at hospitals, mentor disadvantaged kids, tutor, or do basic research. They are generally not interested or care about these activities but simply because they feel they have to and it looks good on their list of extracirricular activities. I've had my share of them while I was in school and now as someone who has to supervise them in the workplace. It makes me quite ill to think he is going to be a medical professional.

Because doing it at home can be traced right back to you.

Because doing it at home can be traced right back to you.

And doing it at work with workstations that require login can also be traced back to you unless you sneak a peek under someone else's login.

Really, I am curious how common is viewing porn at work? How is it different from surfing airline tickets or Asian American forums at work? As long as it doesn't interere with productivity and use up network resources, encouraging people to stay longer to do more work, how does it differ?

The problem with porn at work is that I don't want to see it at work and it would upset me to stumble upon someone's prediliction for anal sex. It's just too much information that I don't want to learn about my coworkers. Plus I really don't want to walk in on someone jacking off at work.

Depending on college/university, not all library computers require login/password. I remember Mt. SAC in walnut, ca didn't require login/password. But that was a few years ago. I don't know. Maybe things have changed since then.

Porn should be viewed at home (if at all.) This should not even be a question. Mutherfuckers should have more common sense than that.

Hopefully this shit-for-brains puts your program down on his list of references, and you can tell future medical schools that he spent the summer surfing for Swedish, under-18, and Britney Spears porn.
