I was in a new Asian grocery store the other day and I came across an old childhood classic candy, Haw flakes. OMG I haven't seen these in years!

Remember how you can get a single roll for 5 cents (I paid $0.59 for 8 rolls or 7 cents/roll the other day) and you'd carefully pick apart the slices and see how long they would dissolve on your tongue or chomp on a whole stack of them? Finally got around to opening a roll, oh the memories and it was slightly stale too, just as I remembered! When I went back to China for the first time, I got to taste fresh haw slices (big American cheese sized slices) and it was vastly better than haw flakes. But the small serving size, inexpensive and nonsticky nature of haw flakes has that nostalgia working in its favor. Plus, where is one going to fresh haw slices anyway in the states?

Freaking everything is on the internet these days, here's a blog entry of someone giving out haw flakes and white rabbit candies for Halloween. Something to try this year...If the little fuckers in my neighborhood don't like them, fuck them all. More for me

On some other webpages, some people thought haw flakes are illegal drugs? WTF? I never heard of that?

When I was younger, my best friend kept rabbits and fed them Haw flakes as snacks, so up until recently I honestly thought they were bunny food.

I've had them too - they are decent. But what the hell are they made of? Styrofoam? :?

They're made from the berries of hawthorne trees. The berries are called haw.

Something like 5 years ago I was sitting in my engineering common room when my friend offered me some haw flakes...

EXCEPT this time the packaging is different and it came in something like a 1x2x3cm block!

I was so stunned, one of the constants in the universe has changed and I was breathless as the world was crumbling around me... "Am I that old? When the fuck did this happen?!"

But didn't all of you had haw flakes to go with the Chinese Traditional Medicine (a black bitter brew)? Well... maybe not... but that's how I got introduced to them. Still love them though.

Yeah, haw flakes are often given out with Chinese herbal medicine because the decoctions taste so bad.

Hawthorne Berry is really good for cleaning fat out of the arteries, too.

And it helps with digesting meats.

I eat street-vendor mayhaws on skewers when I'm in China during the winter.

Sticky and gooey, sort of like honeyears (a type of fried dough also found in China).
