Job Opening:Program Associate
Organization history
YKASEC was established in 1984, to serve the needs and concerns of the Korean American community through our four programming areas of Education, Civic Affairs, Social Services, and Culture. Since our founding, we have made a profound presence in our community through various education, organizing, and advocacy initiatives. YKASEC places special emphasis on meeting the needs of those who are marginalized such as the youth, elderly, limited English proficient persons, low-income residents, and recent immigrants. YKASEC is the New York affiliate of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC).
Position Summary ń Program Associate (Full Time)
For the past 20 years, YKASEC ń Empowering the Korean American Community (YKASEC) have provided the Korean and Asian communities in New York City with much-needed free legal services in a wide range of areas. YKASECís efforts have reached hundreds of individuals each year. In todayís atmosphere, immigrants ń particularly limited-English-proficient immigrants - face a serious shortage of legal services precisely when such services are most needed. This is particularly true for the roughly 200,000 Korean community residents of New York City. The majority are limited-English-proficient (LEP) immigrants, and a significant number are non-citizens who live in poverty. Many Korean Americans are victims of racial and language discrimination, exploitation, and have suffered under restrictive immigration legislation and rising anti-immigrant sentiment. The result has been a striking increase in the communityís need for legal services, in areas ranging from employment to housing to immigration. However, this need remains unmet, as there are no other Korean organizations providing legal services in the City. Understanding these issues, YKASECís Program Associate will be leading efforts in coordinating legal programs to address problems and barriers faced by the Korean American community.
Responsibilities include:
* Assist the Executive Director in implementing the above programs
* Coordinate free legal clinics and legal service program
* hold regular local legal clinics to do intake for immigrant problems
* perform intake outside of clinics and refer to attorneys
* handle cases and provide assistance not appropriate for attorneys
* organize and conduct trainings with attorneys about legal rights
* coordinate organizing activities
* engage in targeted advocacy and coalitional campaigns to address program issues
Qualifications
We are seeking applicants with a strong desire to serve the Korean American community. The applicant must have excellent communication skills, especially writing skills, be able to handle several simultaneous tasks, and be extremely organized. Non-profit or other community activism experience strongly preferred. Some proficiency in Korean language is preferred.
Salary
$28K to $32K plus fringe benefits
