That's what I feel like saying to all the dumb-asses who meet me and ask, "Oh, Le? Just like Bruce Lee?" Then they greet me with a kung fu handshake. Fukin' stupid! But I'm not the type of person of color who lets racial stereotypes eat me up in anger 24/7, which is odd cuz I found out about 44 through AngryAsianMan.com :) I visit that damn site everyday!
Anyway, I'm 25 yrs old. Born in Guangdong, China. Came to Oakland, CA at the age of four. Currently graduating from SF State with a B.A. in cinema. Most of my work at this point is in making documentary videos. My interests include drugs, rave culture, hip hop, and human rights. My website is http://www.LeShengLiu.com

We need honest conversation on the subject free of hysteria and fearmongering.

Funny you say that. I actually find pot and what it does for me very distasteful.
I've actually been able to prevent kids from doing drugs altogether by being straightforward and honest with fact-based info. The kids that went onto dabble in them were at least more protected knowing what the hell they were getting into, and how to conduct themselves in a safer manner in terms of conduct, use, etc.
Most of my drug experience has been through osmosis- I prefer to watch other people high. I personally prefer sobriety 99.9999% of the time. Besides, I'm too practical. If I can't find a solidly practical use for doing drugs, it's not going in my system.

In all honesty, I'm from da islands...so, we're pretty much Asian Jamaicans. We looove our Pakalolo. But, now that I'm older and have to keep a clear head for work and such...smoking out is behind me now.
But, what is an example of conducting yourself in a "safer" manner when stoned?

Well, for ppl that have never done pot before, I tell them to just do one thing at a time. Don't drink and smoke at the same time unless you know how pot and alcohol affects you on their own. Know that mixing drugs (alcohol is a drug) can often exacerbate the effects of one or both compunds.
If you're trying drugs for the first time, go with someone you trust that's more experienced than you, and never try with anyone that tries to push you to do more, but will let you enjoy it at your own pace (and stop you from doing too much too soon). Try to do it in a safe, secure place and not in public.
Some of my advices.

Cattygurl - Right on! You took the words right out of my mouth. That's exactly what harm reduction is. Due to various problems, I'm currently trying to abstain from all substances for as long as I can. But I still firmly believe in truthful drug education and letting people make their own decisions about using, as long as they're not hurting others.
Dragon - Quit feeling sorry for yourself. Go get a new job, or go get laid, or both.
Guangdong vs Shanghai? - Did someone imply something about these two regions not getting along? I don't know anything about that, nor was I trying to suggest it in my posting or website. Sorry if I did.
Craig Chaquico - I saw his quote in my ambient/new age music catalog. I think he plays jazz/chill-type stuff, but I don't know if he's from a band or anything.
So did this thread go from me introducing myself to being about spanking and weed? Not that I have a problem with dat...chuckle, chuckle

No, I just hear things from friends who are from China that there is a issue of riffs but nothing all that serious.

Yeah, Ellencho, plenty of older kids are still going to raves. The Bay Area scene is still very vibrant. Nearly all the legal parties are 18+ now anyway.

Just do a google search for "raves + whatever region you're in" and I'm sure several websites will pop up, especially if you're in LA or SF. It's not like back in the dayz where you gotta hear about these parties word of mouth and drive through ghetto-ass warehouse districts to find that shit, although we still have a lot of those kinds of raves too, especially in Oakland.

With a grandpa from the Lin Ze-Xu school of destroy the opium; and a grandma who impressed on us the devestation of alcohol on the Native Americans, and seeing for myself its effects on people in the various poor communities of color; I've seen its downside more than the up.
Maybe after the revolution, when we have something to celebrate. Maybe when there is safety when we let our guard down. Maybe when there are free clinics and rehab on demand for whoever needs it.
What may be a fling for the ruling class (Bush's drunk azz daughters, or even his coke-head self), results in the ruined lives and lives of those around them for those below.

I know what your feelings are on this, but those communities essentially had drugs forced on them. The government banning drugs and arresting non violent offenders is the same as the government forcing drugs on other people to shut them up - both are cases of governmental abuse.

Thanx again for the warm welcomes, everyone. My drug education/activism work, though focused on bad U.S. laws, has given me a better perspective on issues in China. In the village where I'm from (in the city of Zhongshan, province of Guangdong), there has been a cocaine addiction problem amongst young men for quite a number of years now. My dad has at least one friend whose son is a cokehead. I went with them to the rehab where he was staying at. It seems like in China, non-violent users are given rehabilitation a lot more than imprisonment, which is good, as opposed to how America does it. But everyone says that as soon as the addicts leave recovery, they start snorting again. Maybe their treatment programs aren't adequate. On the other hand, even rehabs in the U.S. have just a 5% success rate for its addicts.
Another drug problem facing China is the rising number of injection users and, thus, growing rates of HIV infection. I think there's talk about needle exchange, but I'm not sure. That would be really cool if the Chinese government supported it cuz even the U.S. federal government, to this day, refuses to legalize needle exchange. Their excuse is that it advocates injection drug use and that it would "send kids the wrong message," which is the same bullshit rhetoric used to keep medical marijuana illegal by federal law.
American politicians are still stuck on the idea that making drug use a crime and enforcing punitive laws will make our streets safer. Well, in China a drug dealer is executed every day and yet, there seems to be illegal substances available everywhere over there. These are some of the issues I wanna cover in my next documentary project called "Golden Mountain." It's just scary how many similarities America shares with poor and repressive societies, and not that many people seem to be conscious of it.

I've also been hearing about the rising drug addiction in China, even with the serious consequences. I think the difference is, in the past, there was the will of the people to combat drugs and to see it in a negative view. These days the idea of "western decadance" is laughable, and each step towards the western lifestyle is applauded or envied.
Think of the numbers of drug addicts that existed in post-revolutionary China. That China was able to recover from this, would have been a cause for praise had it happened in any Western country.
I'm for medical marijuana, but Native American and Chinese herbalists have many herbs that can achieve the same results. Its not as "life and death" as it appears.
If Bush EVER gets out of office; and we go from right-wing back to left of center; I think Amerika will eventually legalize drugs. There's just too much money to be made.

for some of my friends that died from AIDS and Cancer, marijuana kept them living longer and more comfortably. Yes, there are Native American and Chinese herbs that work- but none so well as marijuana in terms of increasing the appetite and controlling nausea.
It's also very effective for ppl suffering from migranes and also glaucoma.
Granted, it's a drug- and as with any drug, some work better than others depending on the individual. Pot doesn't work on some people- but for many others, there is no substitute that works nearly as well.

I agree that certain aspects of U.S. culture, such as Hollywood, is very tolerant of drugs. But in terms of our politics and "morals," drug users are stigmatized harshly. So it's difficult to put a finger on any particular cause of drug problems in a Western or Westernized society. I just oppose the whole drug war attitude cuz in Canada, Australia, and most of Europe, they are quite tolerant of drugs and they have far less problems than we do with addiction, violence, and other stuff.
If Bush EVER gets out of office; and we go from right-wing back to left of center; I think Amerika will eventually legalize drugs. There's just too much money to be made.
True. But the "moral" attitude of our lawmakers will keep any drug from being legalized within our lifetime. Marijuana maybe, but most of the other ones like heroin or LSD, forget about it. Besides, even with so-called liberal Democrats like Clinton, our drug war was being waged at an alarming speed. He tripled the U.S. prison population with his Three Strikes Law, and when his Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders stated that she'd support a study on legalization, it caused such a controversy that she was forced to resign.
As much $$ as there is to be made in making drugs legit and commercial, there is just as much in keeping them illegal. Each year, upwards of 20 billion dollars of our tax money is spent on beefing up law enforcement and incarceration. Here in California, prisons are now the #1 employers statewide, and the largest labor union is that of prison guards. The pharmaceutical industry also has huge stakes in the drug war. Substances such as medical marijuana and ecstasy (in psychotherapeutic research) have the potential to give Rx companies plenty of unwanted competition.
