I was thinking we should start pasting any recipes in a separate recipe thread so ppl can have an easier time accessing recipes?
I was also wondering about separating recipes into different nationalities (Chinese, Japanese, etc) to make recipes easier to find? Or should we separate them by type (appetizer, entree, soups, rice dishes, etc).
Whadda y'all think?

It would help me most if you posted them by type rather than nationality--I'm often looking for a good appetizer, but I don't care about mixing nation genres. We can always swap in or out ingredients if the dish won't match the rest of the menu.

Well we do have that simple asian recipes thread, but we can always do different sections like xian suggested for non-asian foods too and we can separate them out into sweets, appetizers/hors d'oeuvre (that word is too funny), main courses, sides etc. And then we can even have a thread for just posting pics of good food we've eaten at a restaurant or made at home.

Either way is fine, but the easiest way (from a tech point of view) is to make people use standard headers... that way people can use the search function and we don't have to worry if people like to organize things by type, origin, poster, etc...
Here is an example:
Type:Appetizer
Origin:Chinese
From:ellencho
Notes:Vegan
The problem, as always, are people making mistakes or not following rules, etc, etc.
Of course, we could avoid duplication and simply post our recipes on some dedicated site and link to it. But I guess people would feel less included.

Ooh da Tao you're wicked smahhhht, I love that idea because it makes searching MUCH easier. And if someone doesn't follow the rules, us mods always have the edit button and we can edit the post to make it easier for the search function.

Aw shucks...
I am probably going to abstain from the food forum for a while - the things that are being discussed are just too damned good. It's distracting! (From work and the Beneath Heaven forum!)
Out of curiousity, any of you checked out the Japan Bust-up gum thread in Electronic sheeps? There are some questions from me but no one is really answering them.
Oh, and Catty, did you get my PM?

Ok, I also want to add something to our "format/rules" section, let me know how you all feel about this, it is a MAJOR pet peeve of mine:
Some folks, like myself, when asked for a recipe, will give the recipe in its entirety, even down to extra tips and hints that might not show up on a printed recipe, because I actually WANT you to make the dish and LIKE it.
Other people I have run into will give you an almost complete recipe but will make some sort of omission so when you try it at home, it doesn't taste the same as when you tried your friend's dish that she made herself. I would like to ask that if people are going to share recipes here, that it be FULL recipes, and not recipes minus a step or ingredient or two.

Hmm... that is a bit dastardly... but isn't that a problem ONLY if you had tasted the person's food before? (therefore when you make it yourself you feel bad for having less skill) Whereas if it is over the internet we would just think the poster doesn't know how to cook or just have bad taste?

I understand what you're saying da Tao, but I guess it was just my long winded way of saying, if you're not going to share a recipe in its entirety, then don't share it at all. It's a big waste of ingredients, time, and effort IMO.

OOPS!
ellencho et al, I made a mistake with the header format... it seems that the search engine DOES NOT respect colons.... eg. searching (for all terms) "type:sandwich" gives me posts that contains the word "type" and "sandwich" separately.
I will try to see if there are any symbols that the engine respects....
The following is a test:
FoodType: cracker
Origin_Japan
From=Dialectic
Notes>CCB
RecipeNotes_vegetarian, cheese
Note that I used words that are likely to result in UNWANTED hits.
New recommendations will be up soon.

All right, I think I got this figured out...
The engine respects underscore, and so I propose a system based on that and compound words... like-a-zo:
FoodType_salad
RecipeOrigin_US
RecipeFrom_ellencho
RecipeNotes_vegetarian
RecipeNotes_cheese
Note the split of the note items.... this allows for union searches.
This should dramatically cut down on the number of false hits... I think.
