Chewing gum can 'enhance breasts'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4361563.stm

NB: I was going to post this in the Cooking forum, until I realized that gum is not food nor cooking-related. (Never a good idea to give another mod work... and I am afraid of ellencho's iron wool scrubbing :) )

A chewing gum which the makers say can help enhance the size, shape and tone of the breasts has proved to be a big hit in Japan.
B2Up says its Bust-Up gum, when chewed three or four times a day, can also help improve circulation, reduce stress and fight ageing.

The gum works by slowly releasing compounds contained in an extract from a plant called Pueraria mirifica.

In theory, this helps to keep the muscle tissue in good order.

Pueraria mirifica, also known as Kwao Krua, is a species found in Thailand and Burma.

It has long been used by indigenous hill tribe people as a traditional medicine.

The plant's underground tubers contain a number of chemicals called phytoestrogens - natural compounds which mimic the effects of the female sex hormone oestrogen.

These include miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol, which are believed to exert a particularly strong effect, as they are very close in chemical structure to oestradiol, the main human oestrogen.

B2Up says that it is the effect of these two chemicals, coupled with a third phytooestrogen isoflavone, which makes its gum so effective.

It cites tests carried out by Thailand's Chulalongkorn University which found Pueraria mirifica therapy was able to enhance breast size by 80%.

Further tests carried out in England found that the plant had a beneficial effect on the skin, and hair, as well as the breasts.

The company also markets different Pueraria products, including pills, and tea.

The gum, which comes in rose flavour, has proved so popular that there are plans to start selling it in convenience stores.

Scepticism

Claire Williamson, of the British Nutrition Foundation, said research had suggested phytoestrogens may be beneficial in post-menopausal women in terms of reducing menopausal symptoms, and may also have beneficial effects on risk factors for heart disease and osteoporosis.

A role in breast cancer has also been suggested.

But she said research had suggested that isoflavone supplements are not as effective in managing menopausal symptoms as isoflavone rich foods such as soya.

Furthermore, consumption of isoflavones may need to be life-long in order to have beneficial effects on postmenopausal symptoms.

"So there is clear evidence of the potential health benefits of consuming isoflavone-rich foods such as soya, however consumption in the form of a gum has not been extensively studied and such products may be simply another food gimmick."

Some questions:
1.) Is 80% growth reasonable? Even in expectant mothers I don't think it does 80%.
2.) My understanding is that in women who first took birth control pills, there would be a short term gain. (My friend was quoted going from C to D with the following comment: "I've got udders!") BUT, eventually the body accomodates the surge in hormones and things return to normal. I wonder what would happen here?
3.) Anyone in Japan heard of any credible testimonials (good or bad) regarding this product yet?

The bioavailibility of hormones can be estimated by its stability in the digestive tract (in this case) as well as the dosage. The idea is sound, but I guess we will have to see by the bra sizes imported by Japan in the near future.

I guess its just best wait and see with follow up articles on more extensive research.

I can try to answer 1 and 2.
1. Interesting that you ask these questions, because I've asked my OB/GYN the same about breast enhancing pills, because I find it hard to believe that if they did work, that only breasts would be affected. She basically said that it's all bull crap. Phytoestrogens are structurally similar to human estrogen, but they aren't similar enough to cause drastic changes in secondary sex characteristics. I personally don't buy 80% growth of boobage myself. Some women who have children go up cupsizes, and some women actually go down, and lose breast tissue. I guess a good example of breast growth is Gwynneth Paltrow. She used to have A cups and I think now she's close to a D? That's definitely more than 80% more breast mass.

2. I've been taking OCPs for over 10 years now and I have only gained boobage and not gone back to my teenage size (although I have gained weight since HS too). I don't know if this is a result of the pill, or a result of my boobs still growing throughout college and grad school though. Either way, I would kill to have my old breast size back because it's really easy for women my old size to find bras in every style and color.

I know someone who actually did go from a C to an A after she had her baby and nursed for a few months.

As for as Gwynneth's growth, I think she was previously anorexic or close to it. A lack of body fat also means a smaller breasts. Any doctor would have advised her to gain some weight during her pregnancy; and if she remained at a higher weight afterwards, she would probably keep the breast increase. I'm skeptical about anything that would only increase breast size without affecting anything else in the body.
