Asian Media Watch
Tuesday, February 8, 2005

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Sources have informed us that Hot 97 has now postponed the Wednesday return of the "Miss Jones in the Morning" show.

Thank you all for your support one of the many campaigns against Hot 97. And thanks to those of you who participated in our Tuesday Call-in Day to 'Hate 97' Radio. We're doing our best to invite as many people as possible to join our call-in days. So far we've invited only a fraction of the thousands who've e-mailed us, as well as reaching out to many more through our website. If you didn't receive an invitation to join our first call-in day, here's another chance.

Hot 97 has fired producer Rick Del Gado and host Todd Lynn, and extended Miss Jone's suspension. This a good start but much more must be done. Firings and suspensions are not enough because Hot 97 management can simply hire new hate producers and DJs. We must change Hot 97 and Emmis Communications culture, one that condoned, produced, and repeatedly broadcast the Tsunami Song.

Please forward this note to anyone who is disgusted by Hot 97's Tsunami Song, and join us in calling Hot 97 and Emmis on Thursday, February 10.

Download and print the full-color quarter sheets, and hand them out in your community or campus at:
http://www.asianmediawatch.net/missjones/stophate97radio2.pdf

If you want us to put your non-profit group's name and website link on the quarter sheet for you to distribute, please e-mail us at alerts@asianmediawatch.net

Valentine's Day Protest Against the Tsunami Song!

Date: Monday, February 14, rain or shine
Time: 12:00 - 1:00 pm
Location: to be determined by Newsday!

Join the Coalition Against Hate Media (CAHM)'s protest against Hot 97's
Tsunami Song! Where will the protest be? We'll let Newsday decide!

Coalition members have asked Newsday, a major advertiser on Hot 97, to
withdraw its advertising from Hot 97's morning show by 5:00pm on
Friday, February 11. If they refuse to withdraw their advertising, we
will protest at the Newsday offices. If they do withdraw their
advertising, we will have a victory rally at the Hot 97 studios.
Sprint, McDonald's, Reebok and Toyota have all pulled their ads from
Hot 97's morning show. Join us in pressuring Newsday to do the right
thing and withdraw their support of Hot 97's morning show! On
Valentine's Day, celebrate love by speaking out against hate!

If Newsday does not withdraw their support of the morning show, we will
protest at the Newsday offices:

Monday, February 14
12:00 - 1:00 pm
Newsday
2 Park Avenue (at 33rd Street)
NY, NY

If Newsday does withdraw their support of Hot 97's morning show by
Friday, February 11, we will hold our victory rally at the Hot 97
studios:

Monday, February 14
12:00 - 1:00pm
Hot 97
395 Hudson Street (at W. Houston St.)
NY, NY

Email notices will be sent out no later than Friday evening, February
11, to let everyone know exactly where the rally will be. Also, you can
check the Asian Media Watchdog website
http://www.asianmediawatchdog.com/home.html or call 212-560-5683 for
updated info over the weekend, and in case of severe weather.

The tsunami song offended listeners and people all over the world by
making fun of the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people,
making fun of child slavery, and using racial slurs. The song was played
on the Hot 97 morning show eight times in January, 2005 and was
available on the station's website. The song is no longer on the
stations website, but you can read the lyrics or listen to the song
here: http://www.asianmediawatchdog.com/home.html Although the station
has fired two of the people involved and has offered to donate money to
tsunami relief, it's not enough! They cannot just fire two people and
throw money around when the station has a systemic problem and promotes
a culture of hate. The station must commit to changes that will prevent
similar incidents in the future.

Bring signs against hate, against racism, and against the tsunami song!
Signs with wooden sticks are not allowed (NYC law), but cardboard tubes
and hand-held signs are allowed.

The Coalition Against Hate Media (CAHM) is a broad coalition of
community groups that opposes programs and broadcasters who deliver
messages of hate against people of any race, ethnicity, gender, sexual
orientation, disability, or religious background.

Also, if you live outside of New York area and are interested in
organizing protest where Emmis radio stations are located, please let
us know at contact@asianmediawatchdog.com These are the areas where
Emmis radio stations are located, aside from New York City:

Los Angeles
Austin
Terre Haute, IN
Phoenix
Indianapolis
Chicago
St. Louis

Thank you for your support, as always.

..I called up Sprint PCS, to find out that the guy had been berated with calls, and was dropping them as a sponsor. I also posted a few statments...I wasn't going to let some ignorant whore get away with shitting on Hip-Hop like that and making a racist comment.....place your bet that if someone had said some shit like that about 9/11, everyone and their mother would have been up in arms about it........
