IPODS sucks, I m sure most ppl realize that after something like 1600 hrs the battery and power supply is dead so you have to buy ANOTHER IPOD.
Anyways I just thought it's funny that IPOD trend uses a Toshiba HD!
Also I think it's a smart move by apple to package these more affordable items in a nice marketable look

my thing with the ipod is if you can compare price of features, etc, it looks like ipod is buying for the name.
And no display on that ipod. Its kinda hard to sort through 1 gig of mp3's with no display

ric, that's a lame and pointless rant on the iPod. No shit you have only so many hours of battery life. That's the fucking nature of rechargeable batteries. If the consumer feels they got enough use out of their product, who the fuck cares? Plus, as an mp3 player it's a pretty good product.

I love my ipod.
You can send it back to apple to get the battery replaced- for under 100 (for the full-sized ipods- don't know about the shuffles). I know of third-party manufacturers that also do the same service for cheaper.
I have the original 20g, and it still works for me! I love it.
Yeah, a display on the shuffles would be nice, but I think they were gearing for the size. That thing is TINY. I think they're aiming for people buying this as their second ipod (for working out n' stuff). I know I've dropped my ipod(!!) during house cleaning and working out- something like the shuffle would kick ass to have as a secondary one. I think if you want a display, go with a mini.
I don't know, I'm waiting for the 80gig-er to come out. The new full-size ipod have a color screen, I think...
My ideal setup would be an 80gig ipod and a shuffle, for working out.

are there any life size pics of the new ipod?
My sister got this other mp3 player that is smaller than a typical cell phone and it holds 512 megs and has display. So far she's happy with it...
if I had an ipod or anything similar it would probably only be used for the car, I am getting tired of the radio

Well, having my own MP3 player ( creative and sony) I don't have to worry about issues of battery since it's external power source. Not to mention the actual battery life even after it's been charged is sad in comparison with other brands. So you rather have music player that has limited power source ? Sorry why the hassle, I much rather go buy some AA batteries and be on my way
So my rant is justified from engineering and design standpoint. A poor and lame design, def wouldn't have got A in some of my college classes, but of course it's all about marketing and selling the product in a nice pretty package.

It uses 1 AA battery, and she uses it everyday. Since xmas, she is still on the first battery. It said over 30hrs of music...

Exactly, other brands are BETTER at optimalization of power consumption than apple IPOD, but like many here have said it's all about looks and marketing that gives APPLE head over shoulders of competiton

spending money on batteries sucks. in general, i don't buy anything that doesn't have its own rechargeables. so i like my ipod and my powerbook and my gba and my cell phone just fine.

The one thing that apple get's right is the usability.
The iPod's interface is simple and easy to use.
Also, Apple has been very smart in their marketing.
Take a look at this diagram:
http://www.nixlog.com/apple/
(yeah, it's a bit buzzword-laden, but it's the gist of what apple is trying to do).

For some reason, I just can't buy Apple anything, I don't know why, it just seems distasteful to me. I bought an iRIver IHP-120 20 gb mp3 player and I'm quite happy with it. It has an FM tuner and recording capabilities. I think with iPod you are just paying for the name. Plus I'd rather support an Asian company.

Apollyon...:( I'm a tried and true Apple devotee' here... I got to meet Guy Kawasaki long time ago. I was in seventh heaven (that was 8 years ago?)
Again, you CAN get the internal batteries in the bigger ipods replaced, and my ipod has been running almost 3 years (I still haven't had mine replaced yet). The battery life isn't what it used to be, but I still get 6 hours of play per charge (down from almost 10).

YES
Anyways, I wonder whats everyone's take on APPLE business attack here?
It's great in basically feeding a wider range of consumers, but at less their computers go down in price if they want more ppl to buy into whole APPLE/MAC media. The whole Halo effect of IPOD sales and MAC computers being brought because of it would go even higher if their prices went down, IMO.

The point is cost and time here
OK I buy an IPOD, if it dies I have to cough up $99 bucks + shipping + waiting time
Where as the music players I have I can go to market/drugstore buy batteries there for like 3 bucks + gas( if I'm walking to store).
Which one is better at cost/time here?
evil_FUX
Jan 17th, 2005, 09:08 PM
If it dies within the first year the warranty will cover the battery and shipping, and depending on where you're at the shipping should be relatively fast; at most a week's time for sending it out and return.
Btw, which model of creative player do you have ric?

I am going to get a Mac mini for my car. It uses DC power so I can wire it to the car without an inverter or special DC power supply. It can do voice recognition, mapping software with GPS, play DVDs and has a large hard drive for MP3's. It will work with a 7" LCD touch screen. It has bluetooth for wireless synching, internet dialup via bluetooth enabled phone and the occasional keyboard/mouse usage. As well it has wifi for wardriving or connect to internet via free hotspots. The size is comparable to a mini-atx which I could build myself but the cost is lower for the same bells and whistles. For a car I don't need a high-powered CPU or graphics card so those limitations are not a factor, the mini-atx solutions would be similarly crippled.
As for the iPod, I have one and like it well enough. I'd say that the thing I most prefer about it is the iTunes PC software and the extensive use of ID3 tags as opposed to filenames/directories. The actual physical device is good but can use some improvment. For example, I'd personally like a larger colour screen and the ability to take photos from a digital camera and instantly display (the iPod photo can only display photos that it receives from iTunes and can't from photos imported via the media reader). I'd also like to be the sole winner the powerball lotto and know the sum of all human knowledge, but I guess that I'll settle for what I can get.

I'll do that when I get back to my home computer. In the middle of renovating my bathrooms and kitchen so I'm sort of homeless right now, living at the GF's place some nights, sleeping on the couch and showering a the gym other nights, etc.
The touchscreen I was looking at was like the one micro-atx sells
http://www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=9#p503
For GPS, somethign like the Garmin GPS 18 USB sensor combined the Garmin mapping software.
ViaVoice for voice recognition
Use the in-box DVD player and MP3/iTunes.
Only thing I'm stumped for is a way to auto-turn and off the mac mini like a car radio.

haha, another ipod vs. other mp3 player debate. 8)
while everyone's entitled to like and dislike whatever they want; personally i'm not a big fan of the ipod because it's become a type of 'status symbol'.
when the ipod first came out, no one bought it.
the ipod mini brought in a lot of consumers, and i'll admit; it does have a nice design. but i don't think that wheel is as 'easy' as ppl make it out to be.
i used my friend's ipod mini this summer, and i had a damn time trying to pick & play songs. if it didn't scroll then it would scroll past what i wanted.
while the ipod mini & shuffle have a nice 'clean' design; i don't think they are better than say MPIO, IRIVER or some others.
and the attitude of some ipod users (look at me, i'm the fucking shit cuz i have an ipod) is something that turns off ppl.
as for batteries, honestly, paying $60 for a replacement battery is not something that i want to do.
i can get some AAA batteries on sale...maybe 2 packs with 4 batteries in each pack, and get it to last me 6 months - 1 yr.
in the end, it all depends on the person. i'm happy with my mpio mp3 player with 128MB BUT allows me to expand the memory.

Well, I'm holding for a new iRiver model that will come with hopefully 80 or 100 gigs because I want to cram lots of dvd movies and and/or do some hard drive backup with it. Sometimes I have the need to carry around large amounts of data with me and I don't necessarily want to lug one of my laptop/notebooks with me. With the iRiver I have, I can use it for data storage no problem, but some of the other mp3 models, including iPods, don't have that functionality.
You should consider getting a higher capacity mp3 player though, maybe you will find that you like having more songs than you thought you did.
Look at this one..
It has 2GB of flash memory, direct USB 2.0, and an FM tuner. If I were to buy a flash mp3 player, I'd get this one for sure. Or at least one with some removeable storage for expansion purposes.

iPod nano forcing Taiwanese MP3 makers to cut prices
Posted Sep 15, 2005, 2:15 PM ET by Peter Rojas
Related entries: Portable Audio
ipod nano
The one solid edge no-name Taiwanese MP3 player manufacturers always had over Apple was in their price: they could almost always undercut the iPod. But now it looks like Apple is finally starting to hit them where it hurts. Digitimes reports that ìvendors of no-brand flash-based MP3 playersî are have already slashed prices on their players by up to 20% for 512MB models and up to 35% for 1GB models in response to Appleís introduction of the iPod nano last week. And this is before Apple has even announced pricing for Asian markets; apparently plenty of manufacturers there have noticed how aggressively Apple has priced the nano in the US and are trying to clear out inventory before it hits Taiwan and exerts some serious downward pressure on flash-based MP3 player prices.

That is correct! I AM THE FUCKIN SHIT!!!
Last week I got me a black Nano. they were supposed to have the Nanos at the cash register, but when I got there, the guy told me they ran out of the 4 gigs. All they had were the 2 gigs, but I did not want that. I paid for a cable for my AUX output of my car radio and was gonna go across the street to Best Buy for the Nano. But i pick up this Nano box just sittin there on the counter. It was a sealed box with a black 4 gig Nano in it. "Is this for sale?" I asked the Apple guy. "Uh... where'd you get that?.... I guess it is." and he had a good laugh & I bought that black one.... the last one supposedly.
So when I got home and installed the software, the thing did not work. Damn!! Whats going on? I found out that my version of MAC OS as well as iTunes needed the upgrades for the Nano to work. So I downloaded the upgrades and it works now. So now I have OSX 10.3.9 and iTunes 5.0.1
I've always liked the Ipods but I did not like their size, even the mini. but the Nano is small enough which is what I like about it. & it holds lots of songs and podcasts I like.
Black Nanos scratch real easy. In fact, you can't help but scratch em all up. I wonder if the white ones scratch easy.
I didn't end up using the AUX cable cuz for some reason, its not compatible with my Sony headunit in my car. I returned the cable today. I got an FM type adapter to play through my FM radio. It's clear, but it does not sound as good as my MP3 CDs. It is "FM sound quality".
So far, it works pretty good. We'll see how long the battery lasts. And if you turn it around, its mirror like in the back so you can look at yourself and say, "I'M THE FUCKIN SHIT!!".

I've always bought cases for all my ipods and slap the babies in their protective gear before sending them out into the mean, cruel world.
I like my big ipod. I have the original 20gb, and you couldn't get me to part with it.

Rumor has it there's going to be a new 5th generation full sized iPod introduced this week. Probably with an 80gb drive and slimmer size compared to the current 60gb model. Possibly with video.

I'll buy a new ipod when it hits the 80g capacity man.
Personally, I have no interest in the video aspect- the screen's way to f'in small.
OTOH, I do like how slim the thing is.

My thoughts exactly. I visited an Apple Store and it's useless. If you don't use the video portion what's the point?? It's just Apple's mass marketing and forcing people to buy more junk. Each time they come out with a model they stop production of older versions so if somehting goes wrong you have to buy new crap - just when the warranty expires. Then they push out new iPod stands, carrying cases, cables etc. for new models to make even more money. Shit, I think an average iPod like most electronic cycles, last approx. 3 yrs. then consider buying the new mousetrap at that time. That's what I'm doing. My 20GB Color is good enough and not even half full.

They will gain at least one sale from me. Now that the Mac Mini can dual-boot or virtually run Win XP relatively natively, I can get one with a native DC power source, fit a 200gb hdd in it next quarter when they are released and run my WIN only VAG-COM software.
I know I posted about it before, but now it's going to happen when I get back from my trip.
Display - Xenarc 7" touchscreen
Power Supply - Carnetix 1900
CPU - Mac Mini

I am the resident mac hardcore fan on the 44s, it seems. I started using Apple IIe and then the mac SE back in the day- I've had pc's and commodores back in the day, but I never abandoned my mac, even when things were pretty shitty.
Now that mac can run PC, I won't have to keep a pc around to play games anymore... not that I've had time to play games since (I'm daing myself) the original Doom, which I use to play over dial-up. Sigh.
I'm waiting for the 80g- that will be the one hooked up to my stereo and be my stationary ipod as well as my musical catalog backup. I'll still keep the current 20g for workouts as well as have it be my mobile ipod.

No. I have no time for games anymore. I'm so tired, i'll take sleep over gaming anyday...
and my geek credentials with that revelation has been ruined.
