Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

You just quoted one of Buddha's words that had influenced me most deeply through my whole life.

This is absolutely beautiful.

My father used to tell me that you aren't alive until you learn to question everything.

I'll add to that and say one can't question anything until they learn to deeply listen and understand.

"Whoever wants to know a thing has no way of doing so except by coming inot contact with it...If you want knowledge, you must take part in the practice of changing reality. If you want to know the taste of a pear you must change the pear by eating it yourself..all genuine knowledge originates in direct experience. - Chairman Mao
