Greetings everyone, this is Eugene speaking.
In fact, I wouldn't consider myself as an Asian-American in a true sense, because I was born and raised in Korea until I reached the U.S. legal drinking age. For this reason, I think I will most probably remain as a read-only member for an extended -- if hopefully not indefinite -- period of time, a read-only member, because I certainly do not want to spoil, until I feel more confident and at home, the homeostasis formed and brought here by a large set of common experience which a majority of the people here seem to have had growing up as an Asian person in the United States. Plus, I still have fobby English days from time to time -- something that seems to irk many of regulars here. :D
The referral credit goes to vhg -- who first asked me about a Hangeul letter in someone's avatar here (http://thefighting44s.com/discussion/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=87), then linked me a picture of Gackt she posted on this forum today. Then I became curious about what this site was about, asked her, then got referred to the `aboutus' page.
And the page hooked me tightly.
I plan to lead the rest of my life in the states unless something very drastic happens further down the road. However, as a member of so-called 1.5th generation I have always been interested in -- sometimes bewildered by -- the wide social and cultural spectrum the countless Asian communities exhibit, because that kind of diversity was something I totally missed in my early days. (You'd probably all know how some Asian countries such as Korea are very culturally homogeneous and narrow at the same time, making it difficult for their people to think out-of-box.)
This site attracted me more than anything in that it espoused nothing but refined and distilled discussions about the subject while still maintaining a high-energy attitude (that some people here called `anger'). I haven't had a chance yet to delve into the more abstract and conceptual foundations mentioned in the Declaration forum (`the integral approach' IIRC) -- but even without that this site still seems well on track in a direction that I think is desirable.
And there was more. Apparently one of the cornerstones of this site was an artistic element -- a belief in beauty of all forms, one of pure, unadulterated manifestations of human passion, which I, as an amateur musician, also firmly believe in.
So yes. It's a real pleasure to meet you all, or in the honor of my lineage, man-na-boeb-ge-doe-eo ban-gab-seub-ni-da. :D
Eugene
P.S. I live in the San Francisco bay area, and make a living by coding low-level computer stuff -- right now, there's an MontaVista Linux binder in front of me. :D
