View Full Version : War Council at Harold and Kumar
Dialectic
Jul 24th, 2004, 05:19 AM
On this night, Friday July 23 2004, the Core44s assembled for their very first War Council since the inception of this website.
All five of us were in the same city at the same time.
And how did we start the evening? At a sneak preview of Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle
And I wish to tell you now, that this movie is UTTERLY BRILLIANT. This perfectly encapsulates what the Fighting44s stands for. These people, this director, these actors, these writers, they really understood.
Every single situation Harold and Kumar got into, one of us had been in as well. We were elbowing each other, whispering, and laughing like madmen. Sheki was laughing uncontrollably for like the entire movie, and this is a very rare thing indeed.
I'm going to watch this again in theatre, and I think all five of us may just buy our own DVDs of this movie. We pray that they make the next two.
We then went to a pub, got our drink on, and discussed life, love, and 44 business.
We're going ahead with the polo-ts. We're going to make a few changes on parts of the site. We're going to implement a few new sections.
But we want to emphasize, and this is NOT bullshit, that we really do appreciate the enthusiasm, support, and participation every single one of you has shown. We may piss each other off, we may disagree and fight, but we are ALL 44s here, and we all have good intentions. We really, really do want to keep all of you here, and we hope you believe us when we say this. We don't have a lot of time or a lot of financial resources, so we may move slower or more carefully than some of you would like, but we will move, and we want all of you with us.
Finally, I ate seven McDonald's hamburgers tonight, and I could easily have had double that. We don't have Whitecastle "sliders" where we are, so I had to make do. Sothy and his bro call them "meat cookies," and they are SO right.

Congrats on your fist meeting, must've been a good ol' time.
Btw, I hope you'll make some cool fitted T's too. I have a polo shirt here and there for work or golf, but I think people who use Polo tees as a staple of their wardrobe are boring SQUARES. SO MAKE SOME T-SHIRTS, GODDAMIT. 8)

We're doing polos because people can wear them to work or the club. Back in the day, I too thought they were square as fuck. But then Kanye came to town with his lime-green polo and colla popped up, and I saw the light.
We love t-shirts too, though, and assuming these polos sell all right, then t-shirts/ possibly fitted-ts come next. So please buy them and make sure they sell all right. Our realistic projections indicate that we're just going to break even, so please show us how wrong our projections are (in a good way).
We're gonna start some sort of survey thing soon (Lopan's gonna work on that) to try to get an idea of size variations among you folk.

The Asian guy ends up with the girl, too. I can safely say that it is the first time I've seen that in years (I don't even remember the last instance.)

well, not too sure if Dragon actually counts, since it was somewhat loosely based on true events. Bruce DID afterall, marry Linda.
Hell, we all need to be like Bruce. More on this later.
Jet Li's "The One"... jet's character is with Carla Gugino's, and this love spans universes/dimensions! But for all you die-hard anti-sellouts, Jet was also able to accomplish this and maintain his chinese heritage. He converted Carla Gugina, afterall.

Speaking of promoting the 44s, I actually have seriously thought about getting the chinese for "44" tatooed on my arm. Then I realized that would be lame, so some 44 polos would be tight.

Well...alright. I'll just trust your tastes and I guess I'll have to see it first before I poo-poo it.
But, I still can't help but to think that you might have more success in selling a t-shirt than a polo.

Don't count the HK flix--they don't have the Eurocentric angle, so of course they're better--I mean the AM gets the F in practically every HK movie, right?

Big Trouble in Little China...
I don't know what to make of this movie. On a superficial level it has all the trappings of exotification and classic stereotyping of asian men and women. But at the same time, most of the asian characters don't have accents and other than the mysticism are totally normal people. And not only does one asian man "get" with a woman, but two asian men do...one of them being white. It almost seems like a spoof of exploitive asian martial art films. Kind of like how I'm Gonna Git You Sucka was of black exploitation films.

I liked this movie. it was too hokey to be taken seriously. but it was fun.

Well, the whole 4=death, white=death thing is not really known outside of Asian circles, so we'd be mostly freaking out older Asian folk, but that just makes us even MORE INSIDIOUS.

in regards to that...somebody linked a blog on here (but dammit, I can't find the post, I looked for a while too) and anyway, it is some guy from New Zealand (I think, I only read part of the blog) who is now in China and who is currently writing down his thoughts/wacky observations...(at least, he wrote a few entries)...
One of those entries that interested me was that when people were buying cell phones (as he had to), they would pay more money for certain numbers (no surprise there), 4 was bad (and cheaper) and 8 was good. As 44 adds to 8, apparently having a number that ends in 44 wasn't bad (ie. no cheaper, but maybe not not expensive either I guess)? (or some reason other reason...can't find the post!).
Does anyone know if this could be true? Was the white guy just terribly confused? I always thought that the (Cantonese) Chinese really hated to have a house number that was 44? 444 was even worse, and that 888 was better than just 88 which is better than just 8? (hence the frigging 888 number plates that them old Chinese ladies love yo!)
888 ads to 24
At anyrate, this confused me...4 is lucky number in South Asian shit yo! It be mine and my Dad's number at that.
Me thinks that the white guy was just confused as this flies in the face of the 888 license plate and the refusal to be house 44 on the street.

I think it's just that some folks don't have as much money as they'd like to they try to find ways to make 8 that assuage their fears.
No one wants 4s when they can have 8s.
4 is also the luckiest number in at least some Native American cultures.

Yeah, but looking at history, what would be better luck for Native Americans than a bunch of dead white people?

I just saw this movie, and I think it stinks..
what were you all thinking? where you all high?
The indian dude (kumar) was funny, but the chinese/korean guy (Harold) was a lame ass.
ya sure, he gets the girl of his dreams.. but not until 1 hr & 20 mins of constant whining..
this movie sucked.

Well, if you want to look at it from a strictly political / "what does this movie do to portray (east) Asian dudes," you're right. Still, it was a funny movie with a lot of truths - and it don't hurt that the Asian guy wins out at the end.

I asked for as many 4s on my cell number as possible. All the salespeople and customers in the store were all Chinese that day; they were absolutely flabbergasted. It's nice to have Chinese people thinking twice before they bother me with a ring.

I found Harold and Kumar to be hilarious. More importantly, I thought that the character of Harold, while indeed being that of a tight ass twinkie, confronted many fallacies about Asian men.
The indian dude (kumar) was funny, but the chinese/korean guy (Harold) was a lame ass.
ya sure, he gets the girl of his dreams.. but not until 1 hr & 20 mins of constant whining.
Think about it, Harold with is anglicized name is living out what many whitewashed Asians aim for. He went to a good school, and has a good job that he HATES. He's being used as the Asian work horse by his White co-workers, all the while not saying anything because he was probably taught, like most of us, to not fight back. Not only is his inner monologue near identical to our own, but he even goes through the same shit that we do. He can't talk to the girl of his dreams because something holds him back, he doesn't want to confront the "x-treme" punks for fear of getting in trouble, and he absolutely fears getting in trouble with the law. And then it gets to be too much and he decides that he's not going to take it any more and he fights back, just like we're fighting back.
John Cho's character took a lot of the stereotypes surrounding Asian men and basically said "See this? It's full of shit."
It was almost like a call to all of those Asians Males who had suffered through the same thing and shouting "You don't have to take it anymore!"
I'm so buying the DVD when it comes out.
