Hey what's up all? I just joined this site because my friend Ric told me about it. I'm a Korean adoptee. I consider myself to be socially conscious. That sounds so cheesy...haha. Anyways, I'm one of the founding member's of PERIL movement, an organization that works to educate on racially insensitive language, specifically anti-Asian slurs/ language. We formed our group because of a restaurant in Philadelphia, "Chink's Steaks." Anyone heard of it? It was named after a non-Asian man who was nicknamed "Chink" because his friends said he had "slanty" eyes. You can read more about this issue on our webpage, http://www.perilmovement.com or on http://www.chinkssteaks.com. We've been working on this issue mainly through the media and recently through a documentary by a Korean American filmmaker, Joe Kim. Take a look at his site, http://www.xploitasian.com I look forward to the dialogue we will share!

Way to go, Seoulone. Those links were tremendous. Just awesome.

Btw, would you care to share some thoughts about Korean adoptees? I recently saw a very moving and enlightening Korean program (we get mad Korean TV here in LA, compared to other parts of the US) about Korean adoptees in Europe, and I'm very interested in hearing your perspective/experiences. Maybe you could even write a feature for the Core44s (Dialectic, Shibalseki, etc...), about where adoptees stand in this battle for Asian Recognition in America. It could be an "A.A.A.'s" (Asian-American Adoptee's) Manifesto!

I wrote an article for modelminority.com but a lot of my view's have change since then so I will definitely get around to a new article sometime soon hopefully! In the meantime if you google Tammy Nopper or Kil Ja Kim, she has written some articles that have a very interesting perspective. She's a Korean adoptee living in Philadelphia. I haven't met her yet though.

Thanks for your support, keep checking back on perilmovement.com for updates or you can join our mailing list. Just send an email to info@perilmovement.com or to changechinkssteaks@yahoo.com

Thanks again!

is it a racist name? yes. is it stupid? yes. does it matter in the grand scheme of things? fuck no. while model minority muthafuckas protest "chink's steaks" so as to gain validation from a white man who puts them into the model minority stereotype which they say they hate but secretly follow and love, as it validates them in front of the white media machine, homeboys like me live, die, and suffer poor and ghetto. you model minority muthafuckas from middle america have made it... yet you either don't know, don't care or don't like those who /haven't/, who are stuck in a bullshit place which you think as "the ghetto", as your poor brethren /you/ use to justify your stupid arguements without knowing what tha /fuck/ the ghetto means. I am sick of model minority middle america muthafuckas who try to talk like they're helping the race when they're just searching for validation from a white man who gives less then a fuck about them, while at the same time they look down their muthaufkcing noses at other Asians who haven't succeeded and who are stuck in a bullshit place and in the bullshit roles their place on the socio economic scale /makes/ them take. so fuck chinks steak, fuck details magazine, fuck banzai, fuck parcells. why tha /fuck/ you middle america model minority muthafuckas are complaning when you're muthafucking asses aint seen shit. you go on with your lives, saying you hate the white man without knowing what that means... go on and keep saying it when you're secretly trying to find validation from him in everything you do, keep following that middle america stereotype and loving every minute of it while trying to say that you don't. go on you hyprocritical white dick sucking muthafuckas. me and mine will be living in a fucking bullshit ghetto where the only two choices are hope for books or join the gangs... and oh shit! the schools don run out of books. we live, we die, we survive /poor/, doing what we can to /survive/ while you complain about not having the right type of food, not liking this name, not liking that name... while having the /temerity/ to say that /we/ are the bane on society, while having the /temerity/ to look down your long wannabe white noses down upon the disenfranchises masses that are in /every/ city's ghettoes, we are asians and we are poor, and you fuckers have forgotten us in your search for validation from the my trang. so fuck you, fuck you and fuck you some more.

It's all related. If non Asians still thought of Asians as "chinks" or still finds the steak shop name to be acceptable, then there is still a lot more understanding of any problem in the Asian Community to be had. This issue was one of the first issues to come to me as I came into consciousness and an issue that I fully related to having grown up in the climate that I did. If a non-Asian still thinks of you as a chink then they're not going to give a shit if you are starving, dying or whatever. I think you are confused about what validation means and what respect means. As far as respect goes, this is what I want but I know we have a long way to go. Please take a look at the Asian community in Philadelphia. We have supporters on all socio-economic levels, because that is how the Philadelphia Asian community is. As a Korean adoptee I have always known that acceptance was out of my grasp, but it was something that I had to find within myself. So as far as validation, for me personally I don't look for it in whites, I don't look for it in Asians, I just look for it in myself. In the beginning most of my interest was from wanting to be accepted by other Asians, but at this point I do it for myself. It's this simple. I want to have children and generations of my "seeds." I want them to be proud they are Korean, proud they are Asian, and I don't want them to face the kind of discrimination I did. While there is very little I can do to ensure this, I would at least like to try. And I do this by concentrating on issues that I can relate to and that affect me. Thanks!

Vinh and Seoulone, thanks for debating and acknowledging these issues.

Shit has to be fought on all levels.

Vinh's going through some bad shit right now, so regardless of whether he sticks around this little 44 crew or not, we want him to know that all of us really do give a fuck, and that we all gotta do what we gotta do.

I understand where you are coming from. Sometimes when all I hear about is interracial dating and media portrayals I feel that our issues our trivialized. Not that these aren't important or anything, but I know that there are other things we should think about too. Like environmental problems that are common in AA communities. Or the large percentage of tobacco smokers...Adoption...Aids and Hiv and how our communities closet its existence within our population...Language barriers...lack of good translators...There's all sorts of things that we could be working on together. And why is it that we rarely discuss THESE issues? But to elaborate on the steak shop...There are bigger issues out there. I don't really think the steak shop is a "little problem", but I can say that this not an issue that always directly affects our community. You gotta fight the fight on all fronts, even the problems that don't directly affect you or that aren't as noticeable. Ultimately, once I have the money and education that I'm striving for, I'm going to try to work on more issues. In the meantime I'm just trying to learn more.

I agree with seoulone that there are bigger issues for the Asian and the global community to address...

But if the shop had been named: "Ni99ers steaks" straight up that shop would burn.

Im not Asian. But, Im not comfortable with that shops name I dont care WHAT kind of name the original owner had real, or nick. Doesnt that slur go back as far as the 1800's? The shops owner's defense is that it was the name of the original owner (some tens of years before?) so he doesnt want to change it.

I GUARANTEE you that the orginal owner KNEW that if Asian people saw that sign they would be offended. He - didnt - care. Obivously neither did the local government that allowed him to register that name, and then allowed him put up that sign. IMO the fact that they allow that sign to stay up is government sponsored racism.

But then, they STILL fly the confederate flag over the state capital in Mississippi. (I dont care how "modified" it is)

It was the nickname of the original owner 'cause he had slit-eyes.

Shit, I got a prominent Jewish-style nose. All my boys called me kike as a kid. I oughtta start my jewellry store ....

There's actually a place called "Ah, Chop Chop!" in fucking Sacto......my eyes bugged out when I saw it. I don't know why a petrol present hasn't been chucked through the window for real........I gotta agree with Kuro, though, if the place had been named "Leroy's Sho Nuf House of Chicken!", the place would have been shot up or protested......I understand Vinh's angry, but at least someone's pointing it out, rather than blowing it off.

It's actually a cracka-yuppie supermarket chain - decidedly more upscale than your average Von's Price Club type of deal. You know - the type of place where almost every patron is white, and most of the workers are Mexicans, blacks, or some old Asian ladies. Anyway, they have an old-style diner next to the market, and it's patronized by mostly old white fogies. Anyone care to come with me and throw a brick thru the window of the restaurant at night? :P

Naming Rights
A West Philly barbershop drops "Chink's" from its moniker.

by Helen i-lin Hwang

One down, one to go.

Susannah Park, an activist who led the charge asking Chink's Steak Shop to change its name earlier this year, now reports that another business with what many consider an insensitive moniker will do just that. Employees said that Chink's Barber Shop, at 5864 Osage Ave., was named for a neighborhood man was shot to death some 14 years ago. (The owners recently declined to discuss the details of the man's death or his identity, saying it was still a very painful memory for the owner's family.) But, as of late last month, the business was officially renamed Wayne's Barber Shop.

"I wouldn't want anyone calling people "nigger' or "chink,'" explains Sandra Viola Nelson, the owner's daughter. "I try not to insult anybody. I'm just trying to be positive about it so both groups feel comfortable."

Park says,

"Maybe it's because they're people of color, they understand the issue better." The Nelsons are black.

Paperwork for the change was filed with the Department of State on June 21 so, spokesman Brian McDonald says, it's Wayne's in their eyes. But that's not necessarily the case in West Philly because Nelson has had trouble finding a sign maker to change the name. She said several she called didn't want to be associated with the controversy.

The issue got some citywide play in February when Park and People for the Elimination of Racially Insensitive Language (PERIL) took up the fight against the Northeast Philly steak shop. Shop owner Joseph Groh remains in ongoing negotiations with the city's Human Relations Commission and Park, according to Lane Fisher, Groh's attorney. The next meeting has not been scheduled.

Meanwhile, local filmmaker Joseph Kim is featuring the shop in a documentary about the controversy and in a hip-hop video. On Sunday, Park accompanied Kim as he taped Korean-American rapper DYP tha Goldynchild in front of Chink's Steaks. The shoot was disrupted by passersby and a neighbor repeatedly complaining about the controversy. The passersby, who declined to give their names, gestured profanely after one complained about Korean stores that had signs in Korean.

The city also took notice. Two police officers from the civil affairs unit and an observer from the Human Relations Commission monitored the scene.

In Boston this month, a 16-year-old Vietnamese-American teen was beaten to death in a brawl that reportedly stemmed from a white teenage girl using the term chink.

"Being this is the 21st century," notes Janice Burke, a steak-shop neighbor who says she likes Groh, "he ought to change his name."
