Hey everyone,
Thanks humpsalot. this is a going to be a great thread.
** keep in mind, if anyone is going to be posting images, please ensure the image widths are less than 400 pixels. Otherwise the images stretch the page and interrupt the flow of the design.
Thanks.

haha. Like I said, I was REALLY REALLY bored that night. There's also a picture of me "thugged out" because, well, that's what happens when a weird college kid like me gets really bored at home, even though it was nice to be home and not do anything for once XD

Any kind of message board is going to end up as a place for socializing, to some extent. No, it's not a dating site, but I don't see a problem if anyone happens to make a friend from here. As long the overall purpose for being here is kept in mind.

well the guy that runs the site is local in the area, so I mostly use it for reading up on local events. I still browse the forums, I don't post as much, but I use it to view mostly car show pics and others cars. Its not as big as vortex obviously, but it does have a lighter atmosphere. Its just the cars I own are older models and more members are on vortex.

THe thing with imagestation, it automatically resizes your pics if they are too large. I guess they fixed the problem with the linking. Couple weeks ago, all the car forums stuff linked from imagestation just stopped working. What happened to me was everytime a photohost popped up that was free and offered remote linking, I would sign up to all of them, just to have whenever one goes down.

Apo: Our ethnic hairtype tends to be on the dry, slightly greasy side, which is why many Asian men's hair sticks up. Like black folks and Spanish folks' hair, our hair can range from super fine (usually girls) to super coarse (some guys with thick and sticky-up hair). Your hair might be oily because you are using white people shampoo, which is not mild enough for our hair. Try Kose' or FT Shiseido. I've used both and have noticed immediate improvements in the quality of my hair.

Giovanni makes wonderful products. I love both their leave-in conditioner.
http://www.giovannicosmetics.com/WLine/
It's not animal tested, no animal ingredients, very mild. Try it, if you like it, and you want larger sizes, you can call them. They sell gallon and liter sizes as well, but you have to order through the phone for the bigger sizes.
I use the Golden Wheat shampoo with 50/50 balanced remoisturizing conditioner. I also use their Direct leave-in conditioner as well as their Vita Pro Fusion spray and Shine of The Times for detangling. I've got looong hair, so I need the extra conditioners for my hair.
They're hard to find- check salons and local health food stores.

Hey, I wonder if any of you guys have the same problem that I have. I speak Taiwanese and a bit of Mandarin, but its weird because I only speak it with my parents or with friends of the family or older relatives. I find that when I speak to people my generation or younger, who speak the same languages, I always wind up speaking english with them. Its like I have a kind of mental block that prevents me from speaking Taiwanese or Mandarin with anybody other than my parents, and their generation of relatives or family friends. I think it is a bit of a shame because I like knowing many languages but I fear that if and when I have kids, they will probably grow up only speaking english.
cattygurl
Oct 15th, 2004, 06:16 AM
I have the opposite problem. I WANT to practice my Japanese on any poor soul that can tolerate my Japanese, but... they always insist on speaking English with me, except for my mom's older friends. As a translator, I'm embarrased to say that my spoken Japanese kinda sucks. I translate from Japanese to English- one way only- my reading and understanding is very, very good- but my spoken (although I have no accent) is mediocre. I'd like to improve that, but... all the Japanese-speaking people I know my age (with the exception of a few Japaphiles) don't want to speak Japanese with me. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!
Dialectic
Oct 15th, 2004, 06:30 AM
Actually Apollyon, that's an interesting thing you pointed out.
I had a conversation about this with a family friend (ie. daughter of friends of my parents) a few years back about how, at least for kids growing up where we lived, all 1.5 and 2nd gen Mandarin speakers we knew spoke pretty much only English to each other, and how it was very different for the Cantonese kids, who regularly used only Cantonese or naturally and unconsciously switched back and forth. The Mandarin kids also generally had noticeably better English, whereas the Cantonese kids had poorer grammar or slight accents, even though both groups grew up here.
awong
Oct 15th, 2004, 10:04 AM
you may be right on that dialectic...
I've noticed in my family, the relatives whose parents came to cuba at teenage to young adult, their kids who are full chinese, speak perfect cantonese more so than english and no spanish at home, same for the family that I have whose parents came directly from china. And when they speak english, I've noticed slight accented english, while not as strong as someone who came later to the north america, it was still noticeable.
Even with my parents they have no problem switching between spanish, english and cantonese at the same time. And some odd reason, there are chinese pronounciation errors when my mom speaks english and spanish ones too. Though I have to pay really close attention. I do the same with spanish when I speak...

Interesting. Perhaps it has something to do with the number of Cantonese speakers in North America vs. the number of Mandarin speakers. I would imagine that there are more Cantonese speakers, thus making it easier to have a "Cantonese-speaking community." Of course, that's only a pure guess.
All the Chinese Americans I know speak mostly English to each other; I haven't really paid attention to whether I hear more Cantonese or Mandarin. I'm pretty sure that the Cantonese speakers I know are more adept at Cantonese than the Mandarin speakers are at Mandarin. They're English is just as good, though, in my experience. Of course, they're all either ABCs or 1.5 gen. Hmmm.... come to think of it, I'm the only 1.5 gen I know.

I'm guessing 1.5 means we were born elsewhere, but grew up here?
I actually would speak more mandarin with my chinese friends but a lot of them are shy about speaking it in public due to past experinces of people shunning them or putting them down for speaking a foreign language in public. But now a days, I carry a full on mandarin conversation with some of my friends ( they're pretty imposing ) and the people around us can't really do anything about it.
Funny story: I dated this one white girl who was aboard in China, came back, and can speak chinese pretty decent. She'd be ordering food in chinese, asking questions in chinese, friggin talking politics to me in chinese....crazy.

Suggestion to the mods, perhaps we should spit this thread? I notice we don't seem to have a language thread anywhere else in the forum that I have seen. I feel though, that language is very important. Language is one of the factors that alienates us from white western culture. Too often I have heard whites complaining about us speaking our native tongues, or mocking our language or accents. As well in the media, AFs are often portrayed speaking perfect english more often than an AM who usually speaks in FOBby heavily accented english. Note also, that African Americans, whom white American has no problem seeing as American, do not speak their native African tongues, but rather they speak English or some cultural variant of it.

The 1.5th generation people are those who were born and partially raised (typically up to somewhere in their adolescence) in a foreign country then immigrated into the states along with their parents. Often they receive education in both countries, and have a fairly good understanding about both their heritage and the US culture. For example, many of them are perfectly fluent both in their native language and in English.
The 1.5th generation people, however, are also marked by a fairly high degree of identity crisis in general. Because of their adolescence (where people usually formulate their sense of identity) being spanned over both countries, they feel like they belong to both sides, but at the same time, they also feel like they don't `properly' belong to either side.
An example: I'm a marginal 1.5th-generation immigrant myself. (1.1st? :D On the borderline between a 1.5 and a FOB ) Obtained my permanent residence into the states in my senior year of college right before I turned 21, and moved into the states as soon as I graduated from the college the next spring. As such, I have an issue -- this feeling that I don't belong to the states (yet... I'm getting better), but I'm not sure if I would be able to lead a healthy, normal life when I go back to Korea. Work ethic is one of those things that make me feel alienated from Korea -- my work experience is almost entirely in the states, and the atmosphere is much different between American and Korean corporations.

I came here when I was 1, went back and forth every year from Japan and US until settling here for good when I was 5 and used to go back to Japan every summer for two-three months until I was 15. With some minor variants, most of my education was in the US, but I spent 1/4 of my time in Japan.
I read and understand Japanese fluently, my speaking is mediocre. I don't speak with an accent in either language. As for the Japanese, I've got the Osaka dialect/colloquial/slang down perfectly, but I'm not very good at all with the formal honorofic/business expressions of the Japanese language.
I will admit, my English is a lot better than my Japanese. I think and dream in English.
Although I did most of my growing up in the states, I don't feel like "American" is my first identity. I still feel strongly about my Japanese identity than my American identity.

ok...you know how in taiwan we call local people "yam", and those move in from mainland with KMT "yui tao"(purple-ish sweet potato)?
So what do you call people who aren't local, but are from mainland China like 400 years ago? My ancestors moved to Taiwan from China wayyyyy back.
My granddad fought on an aircraft carrier for the Japanese army. (Taiwan was ruled by Japan back then)

Thanks for the warm welcome!
I read some of it. Its quite interesting. I just bought theory of everything today in fact.
I checked up on the lil red book.. most of that is pretty much common sense
I actuallly came here from YW they have alot of the same rules.
evil_fux:and yes I'm actually practice a modern arnis off-shoot called Arnis De Leon.. After Remy Presas died my guro wanted to go back to the roots of FMA and branched off his own style. Modern Arnis is some of the more effective techniques of Doce Pares, Escrima, Kali and incorporates some Kuntaw and Grappling. Its not completely linear nor is it completely circular. It seems pretty balanced and learning the applications is probably the most fun.. as long as their not demonstrated on you.
Makulita: Im 1/4th chinese from my Mom's side.. 1/8th japanese from my dad's side. I don't resemble anything filipino. My guro thought i was Chinese or Thai at first even.
and kali practioners in SoCal? aren't there like 50 million?
SoCal has tons of filipinos. Check out some of the martial arts forums.
Martialtalk.com has a fairly active FMA section, so does Defend.net

local just mean those that came before KMT

There is a very prominent political divide, as demonstrated in the latest election fiasco.
There are three primary ethnic/ cultural groups in Taiwan:
1) "Wai shen ren" or "Chinese" or "Guo Ming Dang" supporters in old-school terminology. They generally advocate unification with China under a two-government system.
2) "Taiwan ren" or "Taiwanese." They've been there a few hundred years and generally advocate separation from China and independence/ self-governance.
3) Aboriginals, who are oppressed and screwed as aboriginals are oppressed and screwed everywhere, and they have no political clout to speak of.

yep. Hence 1st and 2nd wave invaders...
As much as I love my mum she did recount that when in school the Wai shen ren used to look down on the Taiwan ren.
And when in taiwan I generally zip my lip with the cabbies because you never know where their thoughts are.
But is it still like that now?

If you're talking to teenagers and kids, well, they're like teenagers and kids everywhere, in that they couldn't really give a fuck.
I would think (someone tell me if this is inaccurate, as the last time I was back was a few years ago) that starting in their twenties and onward, people get more politicized.
Anyone following the Taiwan news a few months ago knows that politically things got very tense, and the fucked-up election didn't help.
As far as I know, there is a strong Chinese/ Taiwanese divide, with not much mixing except in business (dolla dolla bills, yo). Your cabbie comment was funny, 'cause I think I heard my dad say the same thing once.
LeonChen
Oct 30th, 2004, 05:51 PM
My moms a Taiwan ren and my dad's a wai shen ren.
There's really no conflict in 'mixing' unless the two sides happen to be strongly polarized politically. And yeah, it's usually the older ppl (50 and up) that are strongly divided politically. And probably then, like a quarter of those old ppl are really concerned about whose a 'taiwanren' or a 'waishenren'

Actually, I found it very sexy. In a non-pedophiliac way, of course. I mean, you know, the expression of defiance, despite being garbed in traditional attire and being, well, a small ass kid, and shit. That is, it is sexy in how it is a component of the adult, 18+ year old product we currently have. Not to commodify JadeDragon by calling her a product... agh, you know.
