When the Western Europeans practically committed suicide with their 20th century wars, the colonies seized their chance to resist and attack their colonial masters. They were the ones, in my opinion, who laid the foundation for the powerful social movements of the 60s here in the wealthy nations.

Exactly. The decolonization struggles in the Third World were important drivers of revolution on a world historical basis. In fact, the rebellions of racial minorities in the USA often drew political inspiration from these struggles.

This kind of internationalist solidarity was called Third Worldism, I believe.

Today, however, this radical history has been forgotten down the Memory Hole.

The American population is going to get a good taste of that in the coming years, and I’m pretty sure nobody will stand for it.

The question is what type of politics will arise from the imposition of these economic austerity measures.

My feeling is that America is going to move towards fascism, just like many capitalist nations did during the last Great Depression.

I think these are fantastic times. The wealthy have attacked the working class since the end of the Vietnam War, and all the union-busting, fund cutting, and general all-around corporate multinationl globalizing policies are coming home to roost.

Today the elite through their self-destructive profit motives have weakened themselves in their most vulnerable spot: political credibility. I'm positive that the vast majority of the working class had some small measure of faith in capitalism, and now that faith is hemmoraging badly. The US imposed all kinds of "structural adjustment" conditions on debtor Latin American countries in the 80s.

The American population is going to get a good taste of that in the coming years, and I'm pretty sure nobody will stand for it. This could be our century where we decide what's important for ourselves and remake this whole world. The cat is dying, and soon the mice can relax.
