4 Suicides: Loneliness and Death In Korea’s Entertainment Industry

Four Korean actors have committed suicide within the last month and a half. The first, Ahn Jae-hwan, had reported money problems. He was found dead in his car.
A month later, actress Choi Jin-sil, who is rumoured to have lent Ahn a large sum of money before his death, hanged herself in her home.
On Friday, transsexual entertainer Jang Chae-won also hanged herself. And on Monday, Kim Ji-hoo, who had just come out of the closet, hanged himself as well. Kim was dropped from his management company shortly after he announced that he was gay.
Kim’s suicide note breaks my heart: “I’m lonely and in a difficult situation. Please cremate my body.”
I don’t know about Korea, but Japan and China had strong homosexual traditions up until the West imposed its morals and values upon those two countries. How did things go so wrong?

4:26 pm | Oct 08, 2008This is what I gather from my Korean friends regarding the Korean entertainment industry. It is usually headed by a few producers in South Korea. I think Maogirl mentioned the darker side of the Hong Kong entertainment industry and you guess it South Korea has it too.
Again this is what my Korean friends tell me. If your a Korean actress and want to make it big. You guess it sometimes they have to sleep with the producers or directors to get that spot.
I’m surprise about the Gay actor because there have been other ‘out of the closet’ actors recently in Korea. Sometimes it takes a sad event to have a wake up call for a society to realize what is wrong.

3:48 am | Oct 09, 2008I agree. Parts of the entertainment biz are likely to be shady as fuck. But something smacks of maybe mafia involvement, or perhaps an entertainment group with mafia ties? I mean it’s one thing to think the guy that owed the debt would commit suicide, but then the chick with 2 kids, on a rumor, that loaned the guy the money comes with so much grief and decides to kill herself? This shit is too odd to be coincidence.

4:31 pm | Nov 11, 2008I’m with you evil. I was reading about one Corean group it may have been a member of Shinwha (someone with k-pop knowledge please correct me if I’m wrong)
but the head of the record company actually had the guy beatdown in a meeting because he was refusing to go along with some publicity stunt by fake dating another actress or singer. They don’t play that in Corea!
