The Debate is On

This is more of a public service announcement than a blog post.

The debate is on.   It’s tonight at 6pm Pacific.

Edit: Just some observances:

6:18 PM: McCain is totally Bush-lite.  I can’t believe how he danced around the regulation question.  He did the exact same thing as Bush by basically just saying that he believes in the American worker, which has nothing to do with the current crisis we’re in.

6:30 PM: I’m not liking this at all.  Obama is talking in abstractions.  He needs to talk more about what he’s going to do in detail.  McCain is still focusing on cutting spending.  Why does McCain continue to dodge the regulation question?

6:33 PM: Okay, Obama is doing better now by focusing on the war in Iraq.  What I think would help is if he would use his intellectual advantages against McCain.  It somehow seems as if he’s afraid to look like a bully, but he needs to realize that he’s the underdog.

6:37 PM: I think Obama needs to show his intellect.  Refer to the economists.  Cutting spending isn’t going to do anything without also focusing on revenues.  Government needs to increase revenues too.

Obama could also win some points with repetition.  Keep on hammering the same points.  It would be a lot more memorable.

6:47 PM: Okay, now he’s doing well.  Hammer McCain on the war.  I liked when he said something along the lines of “Sen. McCain acts like the war started in 2007″ when talking about the surge.

6:58 PM: McCain keeps saying, “Senator Obama doesn’t understand.”  He’s attacking his intelligence.  I don’t know why Obama doesn’t return the favor.

Obama has to start telling stories.  McCain is pretty good at it.  It’s what people understand.

7:02: McCain: “I’ve been to Afghanistan, I’ve traveled here and there, yada yada yada.”   Didn’t Palin just get her passport?

7:16: I think the Obama strategy should be to show that McCain is unfit, but it seems like McCain is doing that to Obama.  He keeps saying, “Sen. Obama doesn’t seem to understand…”  Why is Obama taking that from a guy who nominated Palin for the vice presidency?  It’s laughable that McCain says that talking to Iran is dangerous while he’s the one who nominated someone with zero foreign policy experience or knowledge.

7:18: Again, McCain: “He doesn’t understand.” Fight back.

7:47 PM: Last comment, since I was trying to watch, blog, and read Barney to the son.  I think Obama needs to inject some humor into the discussion.  McCain, around 7:34, said that Obama was similar to the current administration in his inflexibility.  Obama should’ve cracked a joke.  That’s hilarious.

I’m watching the discussions right now, and it looks like most feel that Obama at least proved himself.  I guess we’ll see what happens in the aftermath.

I’m quite disappointed actually. The whole debate was weak with the candidates kinda just tap-dancing around the real issues. And did anyone else find it weird when McCain referred to himself as Miss Congeniality not once, but twice in the debate?

One thing that McCain said that got people confused was when he said that the average North Korean was 4 inches shorter than their southern counterparts because of the oppression they face.

Many people don’t seem to understand the connection between height and nutrition/environment (and correlate that with why Asians have been shorter than whites in the past century)

I think John McCain won the debate because he seemed to have cornered the dumb vote, (which is actually the majority of voting Americans). McCain said Obama was wrong on numerous occasions while Obama said McCain was right. Also McCain told lots of stories while Obama sounded more like an academic (which is negative when you’re dumb).

I think Obama could’ve been both more academic AND more personable (for, as you said, the dumb vote). McCain was doing his part to make Obama look inexperienced. I think Obama should’ve done his part to make McCain look more ignorant. He should’ve started quoted economists; McCain would’ve lost it because he doesn’t understand the economy.

The need for the dumb vote is a given, but maybe dumb people won’t vote for other dumb people if they see how it could affect their jobs and standards of living.
