Here on the West Coast, several of our members are meeting together to discuss issues relating to Asian Americans and recording our discussions as podcasts.

In this inaugural podcast, jaehwan, xian, THX1138, and myself (nskripchun) have a free discussion about the current Beijing Olympics and their implications for Asian Americans. We talk about the Spanish Slant-Eye “Incident” AKA the “Spanish Affectionate Gesture” (as discussed by Dialectic right here and in other blogs such as this one); the medal count, competition, and nationalism; and some comments about the nature of cheating and news coverage.

You can download the podcast from Rapidshare right here. (click on “free user” and wait for the timer to reach zero to download).

The podcast is about 13 megs and about 27 minutes long.

Please download, give it a listen, and post your comments…

Good comment on the media trying to paint all Chinese kids as the same. What the media fail to mention is that many of these Chinese athletes came from poor rural areas. They were given a chance to attend sports school. Basically, they were given an opportunity to succeed. If they win, there are a ton of reward for athletes. Many of these athletes are set for life if they win.

USA media does not tell their human story. They only want to lump of them into one to stereotype them. Most of the Chinese athletes looked pretty proud and happy when they won.

The Chinese dude who competed in 100-meter dash is getting a master degree at Qinghua University, China’s equivalent of MIT. He wore thick glasses and his best time ever was like 10.21 sec. Maybe he should have gone to sports school. haha.

I just saw a news clip about Iraqi and Afghanistan Olympians. Their stories are very moving. For example, the Iraqi woman sprinter ran on a pair of cleats that she bought two years ago. She couldn’t afford a new pair, even though one of the them had a big hole. She competed anyway. I wish the US media would cover something like that.
