Flamebaiting, Trolling and other assorted Asshattery on 44s

I’m Makulita and this is my inaugural blogging post for the Fighting44s.

Trolls are a problem for any forum on the internet.  Discounting the popular and entirely un-PC internet adage of, “Arguing on the Internet is like participating in the Special Olympics– even if you win, you’re still retarded.” they are the dreaded bane of any forum that tries to aim for regular intelligible discussion.  They usually register a name, lurk for a short while before reeling back and chucking their shit all over the place.  Or sometimes they get to the shit-chucking as soon as their registration is validated.

The 44s forum is no different.  Though we might get a little more than our fair share considering the general attitude and reputation that precedes us.  There are a variety of trolls, possibly a distinct troll for every idea, agenda, perspective or ambition that a person is capable of.  There’s even a website that went through the trouble to categorize a few dozen of the most typical, recurring types of trolls (discreetly referred to as Flame Warriors).  I won’t claim that 44s is so special that we have our very own unique menagerie of trolls as I’m sure other AA forums suffer the same bullshit that we do.  But we get some pretty (uninspired) common types, as so:

  • “You’re all making this shit up!”

These people, who are summed up quite well with the above quotation, usually come onto our site and… pretty much yell and scream that very quote.  Its incomprehensible to them that Asians suffer racism here in the U.S. or Canada or anywhere else and from any sort of would-be oppressor.  Any evidence to the contrary is brushed aside, treated as a one-time occurence and not “real” proof of “real” racism.  The Model Minority stereotype is usually brandished as a, “Look! See, you bitches are making this shit up! This is a GOOD stereotype! How can you be angry with that?! Because you’re all oversensitive pussies that’s why!” To that, I have a very concise retort, “Shit is still shit even if its polished, motherfuckers.”  People who troll us with this attitude aren’t usually in it to be proven wrong but rather want to do the proving, perhaps because the thought of anti-Asian racism just mucks up their general view of racism and they loathe the idea of having yet another group to respect and not be a complete asshole towards.  Or as some are so inclined, they don’t want to share the Victim spotlight with someone else– people can be some greedy fucks sometimes.

There’s another part to this type of troll we get, and they usually come in blathering about how we’re making shit up because it happened to hit a little too close to home.  Mostly they just muck around, kicking, whining and bleating that they’re individualistic and that whatever we had said about whatever phenomenon (Oh, say like the WM/AF IR Dating Disaprity) is not applicable to them because they are a unique little snowflake completely detached from the thinking patterns of abso-fucking-lutely everyone else on the planet.  You know, “boohoo I’m special!” shit like that.

  • “I know everything, so shut the fuck up and listen to me!”

If anything this might be one of the top most recurring types we get here at 44s.  Whether it be real degrees in post-colonial theory, or real experience at the protest frontlines they never really wanna talk to us, but rather have us just listen to them talk.  The utter condescension that sloppily drips from every word usually works our most volatile members into a lather and bad things happen.  Anything these types touch tend to turn to shit usually by driving off active thread participants.  Because who wants to debate with someone who pulls out some classic Momma shit like, “… Because I’m older(/more experienced), I obviously know better!”

  • Real, Literal, Actual, Living Bitter Asian Men

These are the fuckups that might’ve been (openly) welcome on the 44s back in 2003 when we allowed crazy bastards like these to run around our site.  These dudes use our forums as their personal blog for every slight, every incident that’s ever happened to them which more often than not are tales of them getting snubbed by those equally real Asian women who can never bring themselves to date Asian men using some bs derived from stereotypes.  44s has grown a lot since Dialectic and lopan launched the site back in ‘03; we’re well past being furious and bitter about the same injustices that these trolls post in every thread in every sub-forum.  For us, these guys are the crack junkie ex-lover that comes banging on our loft apartment door at 3:17 in the morning begging and crying to be taken back because they are lonely and they feel we are the only ones who “understood” them.  “Yeah, five years ago,” we’ll say through the door between bangs, “– look, just… go get some rehab and we’ll talk, okay? Its early, just go for now, alright?”  At which point we’d either hear a sob and the quiet patter of feet trudging away, or we’ll get a loud, “FUCK YOU BITCH! YOU’RE A LIAR! YOU NEVER LOVED ME!” and a frame-rattling kick at our door.  All in all, some really fucked up melodramatic shit.

  • Asiaphile

You’d think I would’ve put this at the top but actually these types don’t come to our board all that often.  What these tools absolutely love to do is either profess a love of Asian [noun] and say that “they’re here to learn” (<— Lies.) or come here to challenge us by claiming that Asia is racist too because they were discriminated against when they lived, visited, taught English in an Asian country.  They also have an odd and irritating need to validate what they say by citing that they have or have had an Asian significant other/spouse, or they had lived (past tense) in an Asian country, that they studied Asian this or that, that they do martial arts, that they love the Dalai Lama, that they love anime (weeaboo motherfuckers), that they love the food… any number of wholly superficial reasons that’s supposed serve as credence to whatever vomit comes pouring from their faceholes.  Their stays never start or end well because the more vicious of us have a tendency to dive right into an inevitably messy shituation and make it worse until someone gets banned.  Its compounded by the fact that their argumentative abilities consist of dodge, weave, brick wall and hippie-style idealism (the shuck and jive of colorblind love).
Arguments they start or get involved in never maintain coherency as the Asiaphile outright refuses and/or cannot grasp the concept of anti-Asian racism as well as the other concepts mentioned in Dialectic’s Ground Rules and Philosophy.  And so they’re backed into the proverbial corner from the onslaught on evidence to prove otherwise.  Most of the time they use the fact that Asia is also capable of racism to shield themselves… and it never works.  Because one’s racism doesn’t excuse the other and that our particular agenda is address and fight against the racism Asians face in Northern America.  The Asiaphile usually proves through their posts that they don’t care about anti-Asian racism in the U.S. and Canada, and that they only really started complaining about racism when they left Canada or the U.S. to visit an Asian country and cry about the racial discrimination they faced there.  Basically the, “I don’t care if it happens to you, but I care when it happens to me!” mindset.  Douchebags.

Other than those, we get the usual set of trolls who just come on and spam until they’re banned.  Or the ones who manage to try and say a few things between expletives but the unadulterated abuse on the syntax and grammar never makes it clear what it was they were saying.  This blog may or may not encourage a fresh new hellish flood of trolls, but concerning the latter I would implore our would-be trolls to try something different than the aforementioned– routine gets so old after awhile, assholes.

XOXO, Makulita

      Nice post, makulita.

It’s almost freakishly eerie how most of the trolls pretty much fall into the categories you listed.

Can someone (not me, I’m too busy and important ;P) make capsule profile pages for each of these? Then when people post one of their long rants about how Asia is more racist or whatever the fuck, we can just link them to their personal capsule.

Wow, that’s a great and rather timely post Makulita! I’d say that your observations apply, not only to internet trolling, but even to the wider gamut of falacious debating techniques in general. It’s funny how difficult it is to be truly original, even at being stupid.

Great first post, Maku! Haha…it really is funny how they fall into categories. Not only are they trolls, but they’re unoriginal trolls.

Beautiful! Instant classic. Maku, I wanna put this in the Declarations of Intent. You cool with that? I’ll see if I can jig forum permissions so that you can post directly, as opposed to me quoting you.

Nice. How about pin the blog as the first thing every new poster must read before they post in the forums?

Maku’s gonna edit it a bit until she’s satisfied, and then we’ll put it in the Declarations.
