“Critics, Eat a Dick”: Brief Thoughts On the Latest Nas Music Video

Don’t be an idiot and watch the latest Nas video at work because some PC overlord will likely have you fired for being a racist oppressor. Save it for the privacy of your own home.
Anyhow, I had a mini-debate with myself over whether or not to post the name of the song…and then how to post it? Should I blank out a single letter? Or an entire word? Should I write that this song is called “Be a N______ Too”?
And what do we all gain by being unable to write down the name of a song by an African American artist because of PC rules made to protect those in power, rather than the powerless, when the message of the song is that all of us are in it together with Nas and the African American community?
In any case, the song is pure Nas genius and the video is moving.

6:32 pm | Jun 16, 2008^I saw that! John Cho’s in everything.
I <3 Nas. Though doubtless, there’s lots of people out there who won’t know how to interpret what he’s saying…

8:05 pm | Jun 16, 2008The only white people will be able to glean from that is that it’s now ok to say “nigger” because Nas says it too.

7:52 pm | Jun 17, 2008I don’t know a lot of his stuff, but from the tracks I’ve heard, Nas loves his people, and makes music that is thoughtful and uplifting without being corny and preachy. All of this without any sort of pandering or lowering himself or his people.
And on a totally superficial note, I loved his wife’s wedding dress.

1:21 am | Jun 18, 2008I went and looked for the dress–the green one? Totes cute.
The debate about the usage of nigger reminds me of the time Don Cheadle was on Oprah with the cast of Crash and the two of them got in an argument about whether it was OK for the community to use the word. You could see the frustration Cheadle was going through, trying to explain his position on his right to use the word, whereas Oprah was highly against it. He knew he couldn’t push the issue with her. Sigh.

1:31 am | Jun 18, 2008I’m probably saying what people already know, but the NAACP held a funeral for the word last year:

8:09 am | Jun 18, 2008Well, Oprah gets pretty weird sometimes, even in general I have a lot of respect for her. Did you ever see her “Ravers are the devil” show? That was hilarious.
On the flipside, Don Cheadle was IN “Crash”. WORST. MOVIE. (on race relations) EVER.

10:12 am | Jun 18, 2008I haven’t seen Oprah’s take on ravers…but I have seen her crystal meth show.
Also, Crash is bad. So bad that people embraced it as being THE race relations movie. Ugh.

1:05 pm | Jun 18, 2008A funeral for the word?! This is the kind of bullshit I’m talking about when I talk about bullshit in advocacy. A complete waste of time and money.

8:10 am | Jun 20, 2008^ I laughed audibly when I heard about it. Stuff like that is why people think the NAACP is ineffective these days.

4:39 am | Aug 07, 2008This is late addition to the article, but I forgot to mention that the video was directed by Rik Cordero, a Filipino American who’s big on the indie music video scene:
