Stingson,

Nice to meet you! Thanks for commenting. I think you probably got on the "moderation" list because it was your first post, so I hope I'm not too late to respond. I hope you'll check out my future posts, as well as our forum.

I actually have no idea what social security is like in Japan. I would think that it would be less than here since their family structures are tight and people often live together, but I don't know.

Anyone else?

Well, I can see how you wouldnt want Robots taking care of you... "Theyre everywhere and they eat old peoples medicine for fuel. When they grab you with those metal claws you cant break free. Because theyre made of metal, and robots are strong."

Seriously though. Id be interested in updated census figures. Living here I see more kids and babies than I did back home. Theyre everywhere!!! I remember hearing about the child shortage, and to be sure there will be some gap where foreigners will be required to handle some labor here... but as far as populace decline... Ill have to hold my vote on that. Too many babies and rugrats all about over here.

I might chalk that up to me living in the Yokohama area now (metropolis), but it was the same in Miyazaki (City) and even in the outlying areas... families with 3-5 kids... As far as the problem with sustaining rural areas... kidas are growing up and not-wanting to maintain rural lifestyles. They are moving to cites and to my knowledge that is a big problem for some small towns.

I think you're right. It's going to take some pretty big cultural changes though. It's not uncommon to see bars with signs that say "Japanese only." That's going to have to stop. They're also going to have to start talking about race and culture, which is something that doesn't take place often enough (and which may partially explain why the right wing is still there).

If the xenophobic right-wing continues to control Japan, it will continue to crumble. If not, it will allow greater immigration and people will pour in to enjoy the good social services and everything will be fine.

Hi this is my first post. Some quick info about me, 2nd generation ABC male born and raised in San Francisco.

Is the low birthrate related with the government providing social security to the elderly? I mean as in the Japanese choose to have fewer kids because they believe the government will take care of their needs instead of their children in their later life. I also heard its expensive to live in Japan so raising children might be another large financial pressure for parents. I know very little about Japanese culture and government, but I really want to know the causes for the low birthrates. Thanks.
