I just wanted to paste the letter she wrote on YouTube, which she has since deleted. (But, hahahaha, things live on forever on the Internets. You’re so pwned, sister.)

IN RESPONSE TO ANGRYASIANMAN
AND OTHER ANGRY ASIAN MEN:

Dear AngryAsianMan,

I have to strongly object to your assessment of my video. For you not to see how I have subverted every Asian stereotype I could get my hands on in a comical non-threatening way, you must have blinders on. Rather than see an Asian woman as having stepped outside the box we’ve been programmed for, you prefer to see her as missing the bulls-eye by a mile, which makes me think that indeed I did hit the bulls-eye, along with a nerve. Honestly — were you a little threatened by all this? Did you not like my character in the video flirting with the white boys? This is so hilarious to me because if Asian men like you could for one second look past your own insecurities of believing that these stereotypes could actually be true, you’d realize that I’m making fun of all of it. These stereotypes are so ridiculous, and that’s why it’s funny. It’s so blatantly obvious.

Now, if you don’t like the song for its musical qualities, then you are of course entitled to your opinion. But what I AM disappointed with is that you have a voice and platform in the Asian American community, and you’re not using it to encourage social progression. By you missing the whole point of the video, you are just another reminder of why Asian stereotypes still exist. They exist because people like you harbor anger and won’t let them go. Be above it.

Asian women like me have a lot of strong feelings about our role in society, both in the Asian and American mainstream. We are bold, intelligent, sexy, and strong. And yes, we KNOW people want our “fortune cookies.” HA! It’s funny. We’re not going to give it up at a drop of a dime to guys like you or even the next white guy (or black guy or any other guy). Yes I said it. And it’s high time someone spoke or sang about it. That’s precisely what I’ve done.

What I’ve accomplished here I am VERY proud of because I’ve (albeit with your help) started an incendiary debate - one that has needed to come out for a very long time. She’s so full of herself it makes me sick.

How can she think that she can be credited with putting these issues on the table and starting the debate:

We’ve been debating this for a very very long time now. If she had any clue as to what the hell was going on, and if she could get her head out of her ass for just one second she’d realize that sites like AAM (and the 44s, for that matter), have done more to advance asian american issues than her exploitative single ever will. In fact, her low-brow attempt at subverting stereotypes misses the mark so entirely that it ends up trivializing the cause instead of the issues.

If you want to have a shot at my Fortune Cookie/You better act a little less like a Rookie…

Her self-absorbed, “sexed-up”, “can’t-touch-this” persona reeks of hypocrisy and does nothing for promoting any bonafide asian american feminist cause. She plays up the asian sexpot in all of her music videos and then has the gall to accuse people of objectifying her.

And yes, we KNOW people want our “fortune cookies.”

No one wants her “fortune cookie”, damnit.

I wish I had thought of that sooner. I would have DEFINITELY clicked my heels together and said, “I wish there was no racism!” three times and spun in a circle and we could “stop harboring this anger”.

I can hardly wait until her brilliant strategy of not confronting racism through her trademark “funny, non-threatening” way will wash away my tears and save me from racism.

Aside from the fact that the song was awful and corny the video was lame. If she was making fun of stereotypes of Asian women, she did a sorry job. I think the problem is she is trying to be offensive and there is no nice way to tell people they are triflin’/racist; not if you really want to change their behavior. However, That’s just me.

No, we were a little disgusted by “all this”. And, no, we did not like your character flirting “with the white boys”. I didn’t see any ‘boys’ in the video, first of all, stop using racist and demeaning language. Secondly, since you’re so eager to take credit for attacking stereotypes, it baffles me that you can’t see the stream of stereotypes you unleashed through this video.

Give me a break. If you control the image that has been pushed on you, than you have control of how you’re seen? Is that the logic, here? Cause it seems pretty ridiculous. By this logic, in sexualizing your own sexualized image, you’re affirming some type of sexual independence. Selling white men back what they want. But that’s not what sexual independence is.

Here’s where you get schooled: Sexual independence is not pushing an unhealthy established image, but embracing a true one. Sexual independence is showing the diverse spectrum of women’s sexuality. Sexual independence does not require you to be naked or dance around like an idiot. If you’re going to wear butt-hugging underwear, it would help to not have a negative-butt. Sexual independence is acknowledgment that a culture needs strong, sexy, loving images of both genders in varied rolls.

When you do all of that, you’ll get the level of respect you seem to already give yourself.

I won’t even respond to the ridiculousness of referring to your vagina as “fortune cookie”. Seriously, real feminists just say ‘vagina’.
