Belated birthday at Morimoto

So the bf and I both had birthdays this month, and to celebrate we went out to Morimoto for dinner. We both went for the omakase, and you know I had a whole strategy planned out for it. He has three tasting menu priced at $80, 100 and 120. They are similar, but as you go up in price you get better ingredients. In order to taste a lot of different things, the strategy I used was to order two different priced tasting menus so we would get to try double the amount of food that we normally would had we both ordered the same thing. I went for the $120 and the bf got the $100. Yes I am greedy.
Before you start reading this, you’ll have to forgive me for not remembering everything that was served - I’ll just leave as good a description as I possibly can. Because honestly, when the server puts the plates down and describes them to us, it’s in one ear and out the other. If they had said gorilla poops sauteed in a miso lime reduction I would have eaten it anyway.
First course:
$100 omakase - some sort of tartare with a quail’s egg yolk on top. The green sauce is asparagus and the orange is red pepper.

$120 omakase - all I remember is a lot of crab and some sort of tasty crunchy veggie that they sliced thin like noodles and some sort of herb mustard dollop on top.

almost 2nd course - For the $120 omakase they give you a bonus course. This was very interesting, it was 2 types of gelees. One was sake, the other was sort of soy saucey tasting. It had two kumamoto oysters inside and chopped up cucumber. And they topped it with some uni. It left your mouth tasting like the ocean.

third course
$100 omakase - kampachi carpaccio

$120 omakase - a new dish they’re trying. I guess it’s just a wrapper-less peking duck. This was incredible. I don’t even like duck and I inhaled this thing.

fourth course
$100 omakase - some sort of shrimp thing with a wasabi sauce. Cooked and seasoned really well. Very rich tasting.

$120 omakase - some sort of kampachi sort of thing with a microgreen salad. I don’t remember what all the colored swirlies were but they were tasty.

fifth course
same for both omakases - yuzu something sorbet I think. It was nice and sweet and cold, but then I started chewing on the shiso leaf. Shiso is my enemy.

sixth course
$100 omakase - langoustines and a sesame oil flavored rice

$120 omakase - their version of plank roasted salmon i think, with mushrooms, spinach and japanese potato.


Seventh course
$100 omakase - kobe beef tartare and steak I think with mushrooms

$120 omakase - lamb with a sweet potato scallop hash. I think there might have been apples in there or something like that. Or I could be completely wrong. Again, lamb is not one of my favorites but this was really delicious.

Eight course
same for both, sushi course. Lots of mild white fish, but the chu toro on the end literally melted in our mouths.

Ninth course
same for both, fallen chocolate cake with some sort of mousse. Not my favorite Morimoto dessert of all time, but it was quite fudgy and satsifying.

Man, for 220 bucks, that was a lot of food, so a decent “bargain” in my opinion.

1:15 pm | Mar 29, 2008Yes, it’s true. But I guess I should be more specific, I don’t like duck meat, but I love crispy duck skin and things cooked in duck fat. Whenever my family goes out for Chinese we’ll get Peking duck, and the head waiter knows my family and knows to make me a roll with only duck skin. And with lamb, I like ground lamb, like in a lamb burger, but I usually don’t like lamb when it’s not chopped. Weird right?
