Time’s cartoon of the week, on the Myanmar/Burma situation. This reaction was largely expected. Military junta’s aren’t known for diplomacy or subtlety.

I think the pro-democracy protesters are deluded by the western media. They buy into that delusion that democracy equates to freedom without realizing that it pretty much invites capitalism and Western corporations to dominate the country.

The “West” of course, is pro-democracy because it serves their corporate imperialistic agenda. They only care about the people in these countries so much as long as they are not equals. Once Asian people start to compete on equal footing in any area, the racism starts to appear. Monks are the perfect symbol of what an Asian man should be in their minds - non-violent and non-threatening.

In all fairness, that would probably still be a lot better than what Myanmar has right now.

You’re probably right, I have to admit that I don’t have much experience regarding the living conditions in Myanmar.

Myanmar has a HUMONGOUS military apparatus, and because the junta systematically destroyed the private sector, the government is the SOLE employer. I.e, people actually rely on the government to feed their families.

I really don’t see how peaceful protests and rallies will change anything, even if a hundred times more blood was spilled.

A little bit of trivia. Did you know that Kate Beckinsale’s paternal great-grandfather was Burmese? Possibly a direct result of British involvement in the various Burmese kingdoms of the area. I wonder how she feels about the current events in Myanmar, or if she even cares.

Well, those peaceful protests have gotten the world’s attention, haven’t they? How helpful that actually is can be argued, but what else can they do?

I don’t know, actually. Seems like human life is very cheap in Myanmar. :(
