Ethnicity, Faith and the Future of Catholicism

A great Podcast from NPR Religion with an interview with Father Reynaldo Taylor - the first black priest to be ordained by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in decades. What I found particularly poignant about this interview is his flirtation with the concept of ‘white priviledge’, and his response to the suggestion that “race doesn’t matter”:
Some people argue that the obsessions over the distinctions of race are part of the sinfulness of society, and that the best thing we can do is to ignore those distinctions as much as possible.
That is true. And that’s usually from the people who are on the other side; those who have not had to experience the racism, and the feeling of being a second-class citizen. Many times people who say that don’t have the history of what it is like to be excluded, or what it’s like to be a second-class citizen. You’re talking about people who have goodness in their hearts and only want good things, but there again too it comes from their perspective. Understanding where African people have come from. And only someone who looks like you and has gone through that with you can truly identify with you on that.
