Shaolin Delivery Boy Short Film

Our national television station, the CBC, has always been in tune with the needs of independent artists, pioneering such programs as CBC Radio 3 and stuff like this; the ZED gallery (pre Youtube).

The video is a bit old (2004), but its interesting for a few reasons; it hurts like hell watching a white guy teach an asian guy how to be asian (you almost don’t want to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all); and you get a feeling that the underlying race issues the filmmakers are trying to address are still very “new” to them and to everyone. Remember that the video was shot at a time when many asian organizations were starting to coalesce to address these growing race issues. ‘Details’ Magazine just printed their “Gay or Asian” editorial. And coincidentally, 2004 was also when the Fighting 44s was born. It was an interesting year…

Anyhow, here’s a description of the short video:

Whenever WINSTON LO auditions, he’s asked to do his lines with a Chinese accent, but because he’s only Chinese in appearance, he fails to impress. His friend FOSTER tells him that he needs to discover his ‘Inner Chinaman,’ and that playing up on his ethnicity is the key to success.
