The Split Second Time video was outperforming Jay-Z for a while on MuchMusic: how did that feel?
Oh it was GREAT! I actually saved the screenshot of the MuchMusic website where my face is above the faces of Lloyd Banks, Jay-Z and a whole slew of major label artists, and I just laughed to myself. It was really funny. The only people who were beating in that screenshot was the BeastieBoys, and I have no problem with that.
After this video came out, is that when you started getting the infamous Asian Hate mail?
Well, MuchMusic received it very well, and so they played it on their different shows. It got so much more rotation than a lot of other artists: even more than a lot of Indies and major artists who are signed to record labels here. At one point I was getting the same rotation as Sum41 and Avril. But it was great because an American outlet wouldn’t do that, but with MuchMusic if they like something they’ll do it.
I was watching MuchOnDmeand - the highest watched show on MuchMusic, because it’s equivalent to TRL in the States. And I saw this 13 year-old girl come on and she was like, “I wanna see Masia One Split Second Time!” and that to me was the strangest thing!
Was she Asian?
No … but she was all cotton candy girl, all in her teen thing, and she was requesting it, and I just laughed at myself. Because anytime you get that widespread appeal, there’s also going to be jealousy and hate.
So with the hate mail, you said it was mostly coming from Asians, of all people. Can you tell us more about that?
The biggest demographic that I get hate mail from is Asian Males. Haha … I get these things where they say, “you’re making asian females into a cliche, and you’re stereotyping them, and you’d make a better porn star.” To me, I’m thinking, “wouldn’t I be MORE of a stereotype and have a negative influence if I was a porn star?” I mean, shut up and go educate yourself.
How old do you think these guys are?
Oh they’re probably eleven years-old, and they’d probably pee themselves if they had to talk to a girl.
They probably wouldn’t pee themselves, they’d probably do something else.
Haha … well, I think most of them are 20 and under, and those guys are the ones who have the time to sit on chatrooms and discuss someone else’s business.
[Dialectic with an ironic grin:] Yeah, who has time to live their lives on chatrooms, anyway?
