A’ight Masia, we know you’re hard at work on the second album: who’s producing it this time?
The first record was sort of a demo for me. I just wanted to make it a hands-on get-it-out-there kinda thing. I worked with Yoroku Saki for the whole record except for two songs. I’m actually working on two albums right now, one is an EP - I’ve been performing with a live band this entire time - UltraMagnus. So I want to record the EP as a tie-over. The second album will have a greater range of producers and a few surprises which I’m really excited about
So will it have the same feel as Mississauga?
No. But I think in a way it’s still me, my own schizophrenic way of jumping from different styles of tracks. It could be something slow and emotional to something that’s just rhyming for the sake of rhyming. But it’s definitely going to be very different in that I think I’ve progressed in the last two years since Mississauga.
So when are we going to see the next one?
Spring. 2005.
How are you going to distribute this one?
The funny thing is I didn’t really push the first album in terms of distribution: I guess I was a bit nervous about it and just wanted to test out the waters to see if I could do it on my own: do it through my website and word-of-mouth. I actually ended up going through Indypool Canada, which meant HMV and Indigo/Chapters could order it. But it meant I only saw about $2.00 at the end of the day, after all the different expenses, so it really wasn’t worth it.
In the end I started something through my website called my Greeting Card Program. So it was like, send me an obscure greeting card, i.e. “happy 40 th birthday”, write me a little message inside, and I’ll send you back a CD with some propaganda. And I got a HUGE response from it, and it’s something valuable, because at the end of the day I can look back at all these cards with personal messages from fans who supported and appreciated my work.
[Lopan with a sly smile:] And were they sending you enough money?
Oh yeah, it worked out perfectly! It was great. And actually it spread well, because one friend would see the CD and then another would ask how they got it, and then they told them and then that person would send me a greeting card too.
So if the 44s wanted a copy of your CD, where could they get it? Could they do this greeting card thing?
They could do the greeting card thing, or get it off of CDBaby. I’ve sent stuff to Korea, all over the U.S., everywhere! Or you can order
through HMV, but it takes a while.
